You Have to See the Color-Drenched Bathrooms in Sophia Bush’s House
The bathrooms in actress Sophia Bush’s Hollywood Hills home were designed by interior designer Jake Arnold as “envelopes of color” to contrast with the home’s otherwise neutral palette. Arnold, known for his use of neutrals, aimed to create a timeless yet vibrant aesthetic by integrating color directly into the structural elements of the rooms rather than just as an accent. He collaborated with contractor Orie Prince on this vision.
In the master bathroom, a curved shower and the surrounding wall are covered in blush glass tile, while the vanity cabinet, walls, and ceiling share a rich terracotta hue. This color extends into the master bedroom, establishing continuity between the two spaces. Arnold notes that this approach creates an impactful yet minimal feel, serving as a bold neutral backdrop. Matte black fixtures from the Jason Wu for Brizo Bath Collection were chosen to provide a contrasting accent against the blush pink and Caesarstone white countertops. The wall-mount design of these fixtures contributes to a sleek, uncluttered look, and their matte finish provides a substantial, architectural quality. The master bath also features a soaking tub placed under a large picture window, opening onto a patio, designed to evoke a luxury hotel-like sanctuary. A freestanding matte black Brizo tub filler anchors this space, balancing the bold tones.
The guest bathroom mirrors the master bath's color strategy but with an inverse palette. Here, deep burgundy glass tiles are used in the shower, complemented by Portola Paints’ Angel’s Landing on the vanity and walls. The designers opted for matte black fixtures—including a round raincan showerhead, a hand shower, and trim from the Jason Wu for Brizo Bath Collection—to avoid introducing a third color and to add warmth to the space.
The powder room, the smallest but boldest space, features a custom bright cobalt blue from Portola, inspired by a light fixture found at The Future Perfect gallery in Los Angeles. To prevent the vibrant blue from feeling overwhelming, the custom sink and vanity are also in the same shade, treating the color as a neutral. Natural materials, such as wood-and-cane laundry closet doors, were incorporated to ground the electric blue, giving the room an Italian-modern aesthetic rather than a pop art feel. A matte black arc spout faucet from Brizo’s Litze Kitchen Collection was selected for its elegant, textured finish, blending seamlessly with the bold background. The meticulous attention to detail in each bathroom’s design ensures that their distinct, bold color profiles harmonize within the home’s open-concept layout, creating a synergistic effect when the bathroom doors are open.
