A zingy yellow bathroom vanity and terrazzo-like floor tile create a cheerful space

Architect Stephanie Morrison of Local Studio undertook a significant bathroom renovation for empty nesters in Chestnut Hill, aiming to create a vibrant and welcoming space that reflects the homeowners' appreciation for color. The design specifically caters to their daughter, who frequently returns to the family home, transforming the area into a 'young adult sanctuary.' The project involved reconfiguring the existing layout by repurposing square footage from the adjacent laundry room and eliminating a closet. This strategic reallocation of space allowed Morrison to substantially enlarge the bathroom, accommodating a spacious wet room featuring a sculptural soaking tub. Furthermore, the bathroom door was repositioned from a corner to a central alignment with the vanity, ensuring a cheerful and inviting view directly from the adjoining bedroom. A key design element is the custom-built vanity by Cusack Design, painted in Benjamin Moore's 'Yellowstone.' This bold, bright yellow serves as a central anchor for the room, complementing the ochre flecks present in the floor tiles and connecting with the vibrant purple and yellow carpeting located just outside the bedroom. Morrison intentionally chose a daring color for this area, leveraging the existing color palette of the home. The lighting design further enhances the cohesive aesthetic. An online-sourced metal dome light, originally inexpensive, was custom spray-painted locally to perfectly match the vanity's yellow hue, effectively unifying the entire color scheme. Practicality and aesthetics were both considered in the material choices. Slender sconces from Sonneman flank an unframed, ceiling-height mirror, which contributes to the perception of an airy and expanded space. Morrison emphasized that mounting lights at face level ensures optimal illumination for daily use. For the countertop, a quartz material with a waterfall edge was selected for its durability and moisture resistance, making it suitable for the area adjacent to the shower. The 2-inch thickness of the quartz visually balances the white base of the vanity. The wet room features elongated white subway tiles, installed vertically, offering a modern interpretation of a classic tile choice, and providing a clean backdrop for the Victoria + Albert soaking tub. The foundation of the bathroom's design began with the speckled, 2-foot-square ceramic floor tiles from Concrete Collaborative. These tiles were crucial to the overall concept, as their appearance mimics poured terrazzo, introducing a subtle midcentury modern aesthetic into the space. The selection of these floor tiles influenced subsequent material and color decisions, contributing to the room's unique character. The renovation successfully blends functional improvements with a bold, personalized design, creating an updated and inviting bathroom space. #BathroomDesign #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesign #ColorPalette #ModernDesign #ArchitecturalRedesign #CustomVanity #BathroomDesign #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesign #ColorPalette #ModernDesign #ArchitecturalRedesign #CustomVanity
