Chevron Tiles and Mismatched Mirrors Help Energy Flow in This Feng Shui Bathroom
This article details the renovation of a bathroom in Brentwood, Los Angeles, designed by Gabrielle Santiago with strong adherence to feng shui principles. The homeowner, Jaime Stockel, a Reiki and spiritual counseling specialist, desired a space that would promote good vibes and serve as a restorative environment. The previous bathroom was described as builder-grade with "muddy" brown stone and plain nickel fixtures, lacking positive energy flow. A significant design flaw was the shower's original placement, which required the main door to be fully shut to access it, causing a feeling of being "stuck" for the homeowner.
Santiago's renovation began by relocating the shower to the opposite corner of the room, resolving the access issue. The design intentionally incorporated elements with symbolic meanings in feng shui. Wood, representing personal growth and abundance, was heavily utilized. One wall was clad in flexible tambour panels from Surfacing Solutions, which mimic individual dowels and have an adhesive backing for easy installation. This material not only added warmth but also created the illusion of a higher ceiling. To avoid drilling into this statement wall, a towel bar was cleverly integrated above a poplar wood vanity. This required combining two smaller bars with a central white metal connector piece to achieve the desired width.
Pink, symbolizing love and relationships, was incorporated through concrete sinks that were nearly as deep as the QuartzStone countertop. This depth necessitated an unconventional placement of the Waterworks faucets on the sides of the sinks, a solution Santiago had to persuade her contractor to implement. Despite the unusual faucet placement, sufficient space was maintained between the basins for essentials like cotton swabs and toothbrushes. Metal, representing career, was also a consideration in the overall design.
Mirrors, symbolizing harmony and balance, were thoughtfully chosen and mismatched. A square mirror and a circular mirror were placed side-by-side to represent yin and yang, or male and female energy, catering to the homeowner's desire for a space she could potentially share with a partner. The coherence of the design was maintained by using wood frames with the same finish for both mirrors, creating a sense of natural unity despite their different shapes. This arrangement contributed to the peaceful and sensible atmosphere Santiago aimed for.
Further enhancing positive energy flow, chevron-patterned floor tiles were installed to guide chi (energy) smoothly from the bedroom into the bathroom, preventing it from becoming stagnant at the doorway. The renovation also included replacing unpolished nickel fixtures with warm brass ones and adding CB2 sconces. The culminating feature is a custom pink neon sign by local street artist Corie Mattie, which reads "This Is the Money Corner." Placed in the southeast corner, traditionally associated with wealth in feng shui, this sign underscores the intentionality of the design. Santiago expressed her goal to transform the previously "rainy day" feel of the space into one filled with "sunshine," a goal she successfully achieved through this thoughtfully executed, feng shui-inspired renovation.
