Grilling season is almost here: 5 steps to get your patio ready for summer
As spring transitions into summer, preparing outdoor spaces like patios for increased use becomes a priority, especially with grilling season approaching. This preparation doesn't necessarily require extensive renovations but rather focused upkeep to ensure the area is functional and appealing. Sarah Barnard, a LEED and WELL-accredited designer, offers key steps to efficiently prepare a patio for summer activities.
The first step involves a thorough cleaning of the patio surface and removal of debris. Before cleaning, it is advisable to move any furniture or potted plants to clear the area completely. Large debris such as leaves can be cleared with a rake, followed by sweeping the entire surface with a stiff broom. Barnard emphasizes the use of sustainable cleaning methods, including targeted spot-cleaning with a long-handled scrub brush, to minimize water consumption. When scrubbing, it's crucial to follow the grain of the material to protect the surface from damage, particularly for wooden decks.
The second crucial step is to inspect the patio for any signs of decay or damage that may have occurred during the winter months. For wooden patios, indicators of decay include soft or spongy areas, crumbling or flaking wood, protruding nails or screws, and unstable boards. These issues can compromise the structural integrity of the deck. For tiled patios, damage typically manifests as chipped or cracked tiles, or loose or missing grout. Such damage is significant as it can allow water to penetrate beneath the surface, potentially harming the patio's underlying structure and leading to more extensive problems.
Following the inspection, the third step addresses necessary repairs. Minor damage, such as small cracks and chips in concrete, can often be repaired by homeowners using concrete patching compound or epoxy crack fillers for stronger bonds. For more extensive wear on concrete surfaces, a decorative concrete overlay provides an option to create a new, refreshed surface, available in various textures and colors to suit different aesthetic preferences. Similarly, chipped or cracked tiles can sometimes be mended with a color-matched epoxy, putty, or tile repair adhesive. However, if the damage appears severe or widespread, consulting a professional is recommended to ensure proper and safe restoration.
The fourth step focuses on outdoor furniture, specifically its retrieval from storage and subsequent cleaning. Less durable materials, such as natural wicker, non-teak wood, cushions, and fabric elements, should ideally have been stored indoors or protected with waterproof covers during colder months. More robust materials like aluminum, teak, and stone can typically withstand outdoor exposure year-round. To clean stored furniture, start by wiping down surfaces with a dry cloth to remove loose debris and assess any winter wear. Wicker furniture can be vacuumed to dislodge trapped dust. A gentle, eco-friendly soap and water solution is generally effective for cleaning most materials. For fabric items that cannot be machine-washed, a gentle soap, water, and a scrub brush can be used. Air-drying in the sun is preferable for fabrics to help maintain their original size and shape, and regular vacuuming and spot-cleaning are recommended between deep washes to prolong the life of outdoor cushions.
Finally, the fifth step involves inspecting and installing outdoor lighting. Depending on the type, some decorative temporary lighting, such as string lights and solar lights, might have been stored indoors during winter. These should now be retrieved, inspected for functionality and damage, and reinstalled to enhance the patio's ambiance and utility for evening gatherings. This comprehensive approach ensures that the patio is not only clean and structurally sound but also aesthetically pleasing and well-lit for summer entertainment.
