How to Get Your Outdoor Space Styled for Summer, No Matter the Size

As warmer temperatures arrive, the focus often shifts to enhancing outdoor living areas. This guide provides actionable advice from leading landscape architects on styling outdoor spaces for summer, regardless of their size. Key considerations include appropriate scaling of furniture and plants, strategic layering of different species, and effective lighting techniques. Scaling is a fundamental principle, whether designing a small city garden or an expansive country estate. Experts advise against overcrowding spaces, suggesting that for common scenarios like morning coffee or small gatherings, a 36-inch cafe table and a few chairs are sufficient. This principle extends to plant selection, where utilizing two to three species and a simple color palette is recommended to create a low-maintenance and visually cohesive environment. For greenery, playing with varying plant sizes and species adds visual interest, with suggestions like anchoring lounge areas with large and small plants in a concentric fashion. Terracotta pots can elevate tree height and provide a timeless aesthetic, while for textiles, solid fabrics or small stripes are preferred for cushions and umbrellas. In larger gardens, the opposite approach can be taken, using large vintage furniture, antique ornaments, and bold, repetitive patterns to accentuate the space’s grandeur. Layering different plant materials, textures, and colors is another crucial aspect. Planters offer a versatile way to achieve this, allowing for the cultivation of herbs, small shrubs, perennials, and grasses to define intimate areas. Selecting plant species suited to local climate and light conditions, and incorporating a mix of perennials, annuals, and evergreens, ensures year-round visual interest. Vertical space can be maximized with climbing plants or hanging baskets, particularly in limited areas, creating an established and alluring feel. In larger gardens, enclosing lounge spaces with a series of plants, such as hydrangeas or English yews, can provide separation and intimacy. Lighting plays a significant role in defining the mood and functionality of an outdoor space. Prioritizing safety lighting for steps and pathways is essential, followed by aesthetic lighting to highlight architectural features or special plants. Thoughtful lighting can transform a garden from a bright daytime area to a soft, inviting evening space. Indirect lighting is recommended to enhance appearance, and motion-activated security spotlights should be avoided during social gatherings. Lanterns, especially pierced metal designs, can easily add a thematic touch for parties. For entertaining, incorporating a prep and cocktail area is highly beneficial, even if it's as simple as a shelf or small table. Outdoor bar carts are a stylish option, and for those with ample space, a full outdoor kitchen with grills, sinks, and even pizza ovens provides luxury. An outdoor ice maker is deemed a practical necessity. Furniture choices should be flexible to accommodate both everyday use and entertaining. Integrating the outdoors with the indoors can be achieved through kitchen gardens, allowing easy access to fresh herbs, and outdoor cooking setups, enhancing the summer experience. Effective space planning begins with evaluating the available area and defining intended uses, such as lounging, dining, or entertainment. Creating a floor plan centered around a seating area, potentially highlighted by an area rug or slight elevation, provides a focal point. Considering views, either towards the house or the surrounding landscape, activates the space. Additionally, understanding and planning for ongoing maintenance, including irrigation systems and seasonal services, ensures the garden remains enjoyable without constant effort. Maximizing comfort through shade is vital, particularly in summer. Successful outdoor spaces incorporate elements like umbrellas, pergolas, shade structures, trees, and palms to provide sufficient filtered light over direct sunlight. These elements ensure the garden can be enjoyed year-round. Engaging all five senses is also important; water features like pools or fountains offer visual beauty, a calming sound, and a cooling effect, while wind chimes add auditory appeal. Ultimately, the goal is to infuse the outdoor space with personal style and preferences. The design should create an environment that resonates with the individual, blending indoor and outdoor living seamlessly through furniture, lighting, and decorative elements. Beginning the design process with a mood board to collect inspiration and define material and plant palettes can help in achieving a unique and enjoyable outdoor sanctuary. #OutdoorDesign #SummerStyling #LandscapeArchitecture #GardenDesign #OutdoorLighting #PlantSelection #OutdoorEntertaining #ShadeSolutions #SpacePlanning #OutdoorDesign #SummerStyling #LandscapeArchitecture #GardenDesign #OutdoorLighting #PlantSelection #OutdoorEntertaining #ShadeSolutions #SpacePlanning
