The Bathroom Trend That Design Pros Say Is Actually Worth the Investment
Heated bathroom floors are a rising trend in home renovations, with a recent report by The National Kitchen and Bath Association and CEDIA indicating they are the top request for clients interested in smart home technology, at 56 percent. This is followed by other luxurious additions like heated towel bars and steam showers. The report also highlights that 75 percent of respondents believe smart technology is a worthwhile investment in home projects.
Rachel Robinson, an architect and founding partner at Dunham Robinson, confirms this trend, noting that clients increasingly request heated bathroom floors. She attributes this to improved installation ease and reliability of the systems, as well as a growing emphasis on wellness and comfort in the home. Robinson describes heated floors as a feature that, once experienced, becomes indispensable.
Lina Galvao of Curated Nest Interiors points out that the appeal of heated floors extends beyond luxury; they also offer energy efficiency, especially in colder climates. These systems provide a consistent and even heat distribution, which can be more effective than traditional HVAC systems. Galvao suggests that homeowners undertaking a full floor replacement should consider installing heated floors due to the added energy efficiency and long-term benefits.
However, heated floors are most impactful in larger primary bathrooms rather than smaller powder rooms, where the surface area is insufficient to make a significant difference. Homeowners are more likely to be barefoot in primary bathrooms, making the comfort of heated floors more appreciated. Proper planning is crucial for installation, as the subfloor needs adequate preparation, and a dedicated electrician is required to connect the system to a thermostat. Since the system is installed beneath the finished flooring, a commitment to this feature must be made before tiling begins. When installed correctly, heated floors are low-maintenance and durable.
Autumn Pochiro of Autumn Dawn Design estimates that heated floors are best suited for renovation budgets of at least $40,000. The average cost for installing electric radiant floors in a 200-square-foot area ranges from $3,000 to $4,000, excluding labor costs.
For optimal heat transfer, natural stone, particularly marble, is highly recommended due to its excellent thermal conductivity. Other suitable materials include porcelain and soapstone. Terrazzo can also be used for a modern aesthetic. The key is to select a flooring material that conducts heat effectively rather than insulating against it.
Professional installation is strongly advised due to potential risks. Designer Amy McCoy of McCoy Design Studio emphasizes the importance of verifying that the electrical load can support the system, especially in larger bathrooms. Pochiro recommends hiring licensed and insured contractors and testing the system thoroughly before any tiling is completed to prevent costly issues, ensuring the luxury experience remains free of complications.
