The Beijing Institute of Architectural Design (BIAD) is undertaking a significant modernization project for a landmark hospital in Beijing, aiming to transform it into a smart hospital of the future. This initiative involves upgrading facilities with cutting-edge technology and medical infrastructure, including advanced surgical wards, specialized treatment areas, and high-tech diagnostic facilities. A key challenge is harmonizing the hospital's original 1950s architecture with modern advancements while optimizing workflows and processes. To address these complexities, BIAD has partnered with Dassault Systèmes, deploying its solutions to integrate advanced modeling and simulation technologies into architectural design, construction, and operation.
Traditionally, hospital design focused primarily on form and function. However, with Dassault Systèmes' digital tools, BIAD now considers the comprehensive needs of doctors, patients, operators, and investors. This approach allows for process simulation and experiential modeling to develop integrated solutions before construction commences. Xu Quansheng, party secretary and chairman of BIAD, highlights that this collaboration redefines hospital design in China's sustainable era. Huang Zhou, acting deputy director of the Eighth Engineering Institute at BIAD, emphasizes that the future of the industry will be driven by precision and intelligence, with productization becoming a continuous trend. Liang Nan, deputy chief of the Information Department at BIAD, notes that Dassault Systèmes' focus on standardization improves quality and efficiency, enabling the reuse of standardized designs for elements like wards and operating rooms in future projects.
A core aspect of this transformation is optimizing the patient experience through virtual testing. Similar to flight simulators in aerospace, BIAD models and simulates every step of the patient's journey, from room layouts to hospital processes. This allows for early identification of potential issues and refinement of designs. The simulation helps visualize patient navigation, assess the impact of different operating room and ward configurations on patient and staff flow, and even determine optimal bed placement for transfers. Huang Zhou states that this approach enhances patients' physical and emotional well-being during treatment, moving beyond mere space creation. He also foresees the potential for generative AI on Dassault Systèmes’ 3DEXPERIENCE platform to classify patients and diagnostic processes, further optimizing medical service systems.
The integrated modeling and simulation capabilities, known as MODSIM, are crucial for streamlining the design process. Using CATIA on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, designers can rapidly create Building Information Models (BIM) to virtually test and refine ideas, simplifying complex workflows and accelerating project timelines. Feng Jing, smart hospital project manager, explains that design changes in the 3D model are automatically reflected in simulation scenarios, allowing for real-time collaboration among stakeholders. BIAD plans to develop a knowledge library of standardized designs for future efficiency gains, potentially halving design time for similar projects. Environmental considerations are also critical, with SIMULIA used to simulate airflow patterns and pollutant movement. This enables strategic placement of surgical rooms and infectious disease wards to minimize contaminant spread and design effective ventilation systems.
Furthermore, the project addresses sustainability and urban complexity. SIMULIA's advanced simulation tools are used to test energy usage, water management, and HVAC performance, identifying areas for improvement like heat recovery systems. These insights reduce the hospital’s carbon footprint and lead to long-term cost savings. The MODSIM tools also manage construction logistics in Beijing's urban environment by simulating scenarios to minimize disruptions during renovation. The 3DEXPERIENCE platform’s BIM capabilities support future expansions and room refits, ensuring seamless integration with existing layouts. This comprehensive approach ensures that the hospital's design adapts to evolving healthcare needs and technologies, optimizing efficiency and longevity. The collaboration with Dassault Systèmes represents a significant shift for BIAD, establishing a new standard for smart hospital design and operational management through standardized, modular units and sustainable practices.
