Why the Built-In Banquette Is Becoming a Designer Favorite (Published 2022)

The built-in banquette, a compact yet cozy seating option, is gaining popularity among designers for its ability to transform and optimize spaces. This article explores the resurgence of banquettes, once a common feature like the fireside inglenook, and provides guidance on how to integrate them into modern homes. Designers emphasize the banquette's versatility, particularly in kitchens. Frances Merrill, founder of Reath Design, frequently incorporates banquettes in eat-in kitchens to foster casual conversation, as seen in a renovated midcentury-modern house where a long banquette against a wall of windows created a social cooking environment. In another instance, a U-shaped banquette transformed a kitchen area into the family's main dining space, allowing the formal dining room to be repurposed for activities like listening to records and playing games. CetraRuddy also utilized a custom banquette at a kitchen peninsula in a compact two-bedroom apartment, creating a functional dining area for up to eight people while saving valuable living room space for lounge furniture. Banquettes are not limited to kitchens. They can soften the formality of a dining room, as demonstrated by Hollis Jordyn Design, who created an upholstered banquette piled with pillows in a dining room, making it suitable for dining, games, and homework. Chiara de Rege, a New York-based interior designer, strategically placed a banquette in a wide hallway of an Upper West Side apartment, converting previously unused space into a sophisticated play and homework area for older children. She also designed a banquette-like window seat in a child's bedroom to capitalize on an oblique view of Central Park. When planning a banquette, layout considerations are crucial. Options include straight, L-shaped, or U-shaped configurations, which can be custom-fitted into existing nooks or used to define new zones within open spaces. Kirsten Blazek of A1000xBetter illustrates this by using an L-shaped banquette in a large Sierra Madre kitchen to delineate the dining area and create a more enclosed, cozy feel. Many banquettes offer integrated storage. Ms. de Rege and Ms. Merrill commonly include pullout drawers in the bases, and Hollis Jordyn Design incorporates cabinets with stone tops at the ends for mini buffets. However, designers caution that this storage is best for less frequently accessed items, as chairs and table legs can obstruct daily access. Fabric selection is another key design element. Designers advise choosing fabrics that are both expressive and durable. Nancy Ruddy suggests using bold patterns and colors to make the banquette a focal point. For practicality, especially in dining areas, easy-to-clean materials like leather or high-performance outdoor fabrics, which offer both aesthetic appeal and stain resistance, are recommended. Finally, careful attention to dimensions is essential for comfort and functionality. Factors such as seat height (typically 18 inches for dining), seat back angle (a 15-degree recline for a sofa-like feel, or more upright for dining), and overall depth (at least 24 inches, with potential for varying depths in different sections to create lounge areas) should be customized to the intended use and user preferences. #HomeDesign #InteriorDesign #BanquetteSeating #KitchenDesign #DiningRoomDesign #SpaceOptimization #FurnitureDesign #HomeDecor #CustomFurniture #HomeDesign #InteriorDesign #BanquetteSeating #KitchenDesign #DiningRoomDesign #SpaceOptimization #FurnitureDesign #HomeDecor #CustomFurniture
