The Next Big Molding Trend Instantly Elevates Basic Doors
Interior designer Lucinda Sanford discovered a decorative trim technique that transforms ordinary doors into a design feature, drawing inspiration from a 'pearl necklace' style plaster molding she admired in an Irish bedroom. Faced with a budget constraint while decorating a London apartment, particularly an uninspiring hallway, Sanford opted against bespoke or glazed doors. Instead, she decided to apply her unique take on beaded cornices to the internal doors, using oversized bobbins. These bobbins, similar to the turned wood balls found on antique furniture, were sourced from Decora in 60-inch strips, flat on one side and rounded on the other.
Sanford initially applied the bobbin trim to the bathroom and lounge doors, and subsequently around all the doorframes within the entryway. This method proved to be a cost-effective solution, allowing her to purchase more economical plain fire doors. She also extended this technique to the baseboards, which were crafted from simple MDF sheets and then adorned with the beading. The application process involved gluing the raw wood moldings to the walls and securing them with nails to the doors for added stability. The most time-consuming aspect of the project was the priming and painting of the strips. Sanford noted that, in retrospect, having the strips professionally spray-painted off-site in the chosen hue, Vert de Mer by Edward Bulmer, would have expedited the process.
To complement the painted trim and ensure it stood out, Sanford selected a tonal blue wallpaper from Sandberg. This strategic choice allowed for maximum exposure of the wallpaper between the top of the doorframes and the ceilings, maintaining a neat and cohesive appearance despite the decorative elements. The continuous use of color throughout the space created a harmonious flow. The client expressed satisfaction with the transformed entrance, which now resembles a 'jewel-box.' Sanford is now integrating this molding style into other projects, including a ceiling application, and suggests its versatility for shelving fronts, highlighting the endless possibilities of this decorative technique.
This design approach demonstrates how thoughtful and creative use of materials can significantly enhance a space without incurring high costs. By focusing on overlooked elements like doorframes and baseboards, Sanford achieved a sophisticated and personalized look, proving that budget-friendly solutions can still yield high-impact design results. The project underscores the value of repurposing traditional elements in contemporary settings to create unique and memorable interiors.
