Is This TikToker's DIY For Above-Ground Pool Steps One To Try Or Skip This Summer?
Above-ground pools offer a cost-effective and flexible alternative to in-ground pools, providing families with a way to cool off during summer without the high price and extensive installation associated with traditional pool types. While above-ground pools may not possess the luxurious aesthetic of their in-ground counterparts, they offer numerous advantages, such as easier maintenance, affordability, and portability, allowing them to be moved if a homeowner relocates. Many of these pools typically come equipped with a basic ladder for entry and exit.
However, a recent TikTok video by user @krazygirl.80 presented a DIY tutorial for constructing alternative stairs for an above-ground pool. The video showcased stairs built from cement bricks and wooden blocks. Upon closer inspection, several critical safety concerns emerged. The cement bricks, forming the base and risers of the stairs, were not secured with cement or any adhesive, making the structure potentially unstable. Furthermore, the design completely lacked a railing, which is a fundamental safety feature for any set of stairs, especially those leading into a body of water. This absence of a railing means that individuals using these stairs would have very limited support or stability, increasing the risk of falls and injuries.
TikTok users quickly voiced their apprehension in the comments section of the video. Many expressed concerns about the perceived wobbliness of the structure. Several commenters offered suggestions for improving stability, such as using block adhesive or cementing the blocks together, highlighting the community's recognition of the inherent dangers in the unanchored design. The construction method, which involved sliding wooden pieces into the holes of cement bricks to create steps, with sand poured into the bottom layer's brick holes for attempted stabilization, proved insufficient to guarantee safety. The lack of any secure bonding between the components raises the strong possibility of the structure shifting or collapsing under use.
Given these significant safety hazards, recreating this particular DIY project for an above-ground pool is not recommended. Instead, safer and professionally designed alternatives are available. Numerous manufacturers produce above-ground pool stairs specifically engineered for safety and durability. These commercially available stairs often include features like multiple steps and sturdy handrails to ensure safe entry and exit from the pool. Examples of such products include the XtremepowerUS Premium Pool Ladder and the Confer Plastics Step-1X: Durable Pool Entry, both available through online retailers like Amazon. These products are designed to support significant weight and provide the necessary stability.
When considering purchasing pre-made pool stairs, it is crucial to verify their compatibility with the specific above-ground pool in question, particularly regarding height. While many commercially available options are designed to be placed inside the pool, external pool step options also exist for those who prefer that configuration. Prioritizing safety, especially when it involves structures near water, is paramount. Therefore, investing in professionally manufactured and safety-tested pool stairs is a more prudent choice than attempting a potentially hazardous DIY construction.
