How do you make beautiful original features stand out? Just paint them white, says this designer
Studio Nato, a Clinton-based design studio, undertook the task of refining a Victorian townhouse in Brooklyn's Park Slope, focusing on blending the building's historical elements with modern design. The exterior of the brownstone, characterized by intricate details and a barrel shape, maintained its historic charm within a neighborhood known for such homes. The interior, however, required an update to reflect a contemporary aesthetic while honoring its heritage. The design team aimed to integrate modern furniture, organic curves, and a vibrant color palette.
A key aspect of the renovation involved maintaining the dazzlingly white crown molding, a feature from a previous renovation. Studio Nato opted to keep this white paint scheme, making minor adjustments to the molding and custom millwork to emphasize the home's original character and historical appeal. Nathan Cuttle, Studio Nato's founder and director, explained that the white paint brightens the space and accentuates the shadows created by the intricate floral reliefs and carved details of the molding, making these features stand out without being overpowering.
The crown molding serves as a consistent design element throughout the Victorian brownstone, guiding visitors through different rooms with its detailed carvings and floral motifs. In the entryway, the white molding creates a strong first impression and contributes to a sense of continuity across the home. The existing walnut flooring, with its rich and deep color, was retained, adding warmth and sophistication without the need for an entryway rug.
In the living room, the crown molding encircles an existing mirror, which was preserved and repainted. The decision to leave the living room windows without curtains further highlights the intricate molding. Cuttle noted that the mirror and molding served to delineate the living room into two distinct areas: a brightly lit sitting area by the bay window and a more intimate piano space. This approach allowed for a less symmetrical and conventional layout, moving away from a traditional focal point like a fireplace.
The white walls throughout the home provided a neutral backdrop, allowing Studio Nato to experiment with a playful pastel color palette in the decor. This was achieved through the careful selection of art and fabrics. The clients' interest in textiles, particularly custom pillows, influenced the choice of art, which included tapestries and woven works. This research also informed the color palette, featuring soft, neutral backgrounds interspersed with colorful details. Two pieces of living room wall art by Ky Anderson were instrumental in unifying the color scheme.
The design strategy aimed for a light and airy atmosphere to counterbalance the visual weight and serious quality of the existing walnut floors. Adjacent to the formal living space, a more intimate TV room was designed with a custom modular media cabinet made of white oak and brass hardware. This cabinet was conceived to be rearrangeable and functional, providing a space for family connection and children's play. The shelving boxes were crafted from dovetailed white oak.
The master bedroom also showcases beautiful original detailing. The existing ceiling was preserved, and the room was repainted white after removing old wallpaper, enhancing brightness and promoting a calming and inviting ambiance. The soft color palette brought attention to the unique textures and materials, such as the wood grain of a maple dresser and the leather texture on bedside table drawer fronts. This project prioritized the tactile qualities of the selected materials, with bedroom furniture sourced from Croft House and sconces from Allied Maker.
