Previous owners had also effectively utilized the attic space, converting it into an additional bedroom and a family room. However, the bungalow presented challenges, particularly its dark and inefficient floor plan in the 1990s addition. This section included a bedroom and laundry overlooking the garden, a space Jennie felt was better suited for a living area. A significant issue was the lack of kitchen bench space, compelling Jennie to prepare meals on the stovetop. To address these functional shortcomings and improve the home's flow, the family engaged architect Adam Hampton of Hampton Architecture in 2019. The architects prioritized low-tech, low-energy, and low-impact materials and building systems. Approximately 80% of the building's mass, including earth, stone, and straw, is derived from local sources. A life cycle analysis conducted from 'cradle to gate' indicated a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to conventional construction. This approach underscores a commitment to environmental responsibility throughout the construction process. The upper floors of the house feature 45cm thick earthen walls, with timber decks supporting the living spaces. The interior and exterior lime plaster utilized the local "calicostrado" technique. Mechanization was introduced to improve both execution efficiency and economic viability. Situated on a rugged peninsula along the Pacific Ocean, the house's layout follows the natural topography, aligning with the cliff face and forming sheltered garden courtyards that provide protection from the elements. The site features existing cypress trees and a ravine, which the house integrates into its design. The residence is conceptually divided into two main sections by the ravine. One side hosts a traditional Japanese entrance pavilion, known as a genkan, while the other contains the primary living spaces of the main house. These two parts are connected by a glass-enclosed bridge that spans the ravine, creating a dynamic transition and offering framed views of the surrounding landscape, thus enhancing the connection between the inhabitants and their natural environment. The design emphasizes orchestrated movement through the house to continually present residents with views of nature. Rising two levels, the home is oriented to the west to maximize panoramic views of the ocean. In contrast, the eastern portion of the structure is partially embedded into the site, housing more private and sheltered rooms. A central kitchen features a sculptural island with organic forms, complementing the natural aesthetic of the home, and adjoins a terrace and an infinity pool, further blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor living. The material palette primarily consists of wood and stone, chosen for their complementary textures and qualities that echo the local landscape. Facades are clad in quarried limestone, laid in thin courses to mimic the striations found in the region's cliffs. The walls are faceted, resembling chiseled rocky outcrops, which further integrates the architecture with its rugged surroundings. A thin roof plane extends beyond the building's footprint, offering protection from the sun and wind while large expanses of glass allow for expansive views and ample natural light. Clerestory windows, positioned between the walls and roof, ensure continuous natural light throughout the day and across seasons, illuminating the interior spaces. Inside, wide-plank flooring made from reclaimed teak provides a calm and cohesive foundation. The project involved the renovation of a 1960s home and the addition of a compact, single-story extension in British Columbia, Canada. The property, situated at the end of a suburban street, is characterized by rocky outcrops, mature fir and oak trees, and expansive 180-degree views of an inlet. The clients' vision for a new residence on this sensitive, waterfront site led to a solution focused on minimal ecological impact by retaining and renovating the existing structure, alongside the new addition. Strict waterfront setback regulations played a pivotal role in shaping the design of the addition, which accommodates the primary bedroom and en suite. These regulations necessitated an irregularly shaped building envelope. The design of the new volume features a minimal footprint, carefully touching the terrain with recessed concrete foundation walls to prevent extensive excavation in the marine-protected area. The structure itself is designed to appear as though it is hovering, with its roof dramatically soaring 13 feet above a cantilevered screen wall that extends to a sharp point. Access to the home is orchestrated by a colonnade-lined staircase that directs visitors to the front door. The addition is clad in light-stained cedar, creating a visual contrast with the original house's shed-roof forms and dark finishes, which are intended to echo the granite shoreline. In terms of landscaping, patios and pathways are seamlessly integrated with the site's native vegetation and natural topography. The design incorporates expansive windows, some with concealed frames to blur the distinction between interior and exterior spaces, and others strategically placed to frame specific vistas. These windows are instrumental in capturing the changing light and ocean reflections, thereby animating the interior spaces throughout the day. The lower level of the home is built into the hillside, utilizing the earth-sheltered concept for natural insulation. Nine inches of soil on top of this level, combined with a foot-thick concrete wall, significantly reduce air leakage and stabilize interior temperatures, contributing to substantial natural heating and cooling. This strategic construction minimizes energy consumption, making the home more environmentally friendly and comfortable year-round. The upper level of the house features a distinctive "floating roof" design. This rectangular roof appears to hover above the glass facades, an illusion created by lowered cabinets and interior walls. The roof is subtly rotated and gently tilted upwards at the edges, reminiscent of an origami bird. This angular differentiation is not merely aesthetic; it strategically creates shaded areas throughout the day, allowing residents to enjoy the outdoor environment in various conditions. Furthermore, the roof discreetly houses a comprehensive array of solar panels, which generate enough electricity to power the entire house and charge three electric vehicles, highlighting a strong commitment to energy independence and sustainability. To counterbalance the raw appearance of the wooden interior, Bonner incorporated faux finishes throughout the home. Moving beyond traditional faux-finishing methods, she embraced a contemporary technique of color blocking, drawing inspiration from pop culture. This approach results in vibrant, bold, and intentionally deceptive finishes that contrast with the structural timber. Examples include ceramic tiles in the bathroom mimicking marble and vinyl or engineered composite tiles replicating terrazzo, wood, or 'drawing' finishes in other rooms.
