Moebe debuts a flexible shelving system that is held together by wedges
Copenhagen-based studio Moebe has developed an innovative shelving system that emphasizes flexibility, ease of assembly, and a refined aesthetic. The system is designed to be completely tool-free, eliminating the need for screws, glue, or welding, which aligns with Moebe's philosophy of intelligent and simple design. This approach allows users to configure and reconfigure their storage solutions effortlessly, adapting them to diverse spaces and individual requirements.
The core of the shelving system's ingenious design lies in its use of wooden wedges. These wedges are precisely crafted to slot into angled holes within the timber shelves. This mechanical connection creates a secure and stable joint, with the unique characteristic that any additional weight placed on the shelf actually tightens the joint, enhancing its stability. This mechanism showcases a thoughtful understanding of physics and material interaction to achieve functional robustness.
The system features rounded steel uprights that serve as the vertical support structure. These uprights allow for shelves to be positioned at any desired height, providing maximum customization. The modular nature extends to the uprights themselves, which are available in three different heights and can be interconnected to expand the system both horizontally and vertically. This modularity ensures that the shelving can grow and evolve with the user's needs, making it a versatile piece of furniture suitable for various applications, from residential living spaces to commercial environments.
Foundational to Moebe's design ethos, as articulated by co-founder Anders Thams, is the principle of creating simple constructions. The studio actively challenges conventional manufacturing methods that often rely on adhesives and fasteners. Their goal is to distill designs to their most basic forms and functions, resulting in products that are not only aesthetically clean but also inherently intuitive to use. This commitment to simplicity and functionality is evident in the shelving system's minimalist appearance and its straightforward assembly process.
The shelving system is constructed from high-quality materials, offering options in oiled oak and black stained ash wood, providing a choice of finishes to complement different interior styles. This product marks Moebe's most ambitious furniture piece to date, showcasing their growth and expanding capabilities since their establishment in 2014 by partners Martin De Neergaard Christensen, Nicholas Oldroyd, and Anders Thams. Alongside this new shelving system, Moebe also launched a new coat rack and a full-body wall mirror, further expanding their product range.
The system was first unveiled at the Stockholm Furniture Fair, a prominent event within the city-wide festival held in February. Its introduction at such a respected design fair highlights its significance and potential impact within the furniture design industry, signaling a trend towards more user-friendly, adaptable, and sustainably-minded furniture solutions.
