A New Solution for Open Office Shelving
The modern open office environment, while offering numerous opportunities for collaboration and flexibility, also presents significant challenges, particularly regarding space demarcation and optimization. A common issue arises from the need to provide storage while simultaneously maintaining clear sightlines and avoiding visual clutter. Traditional shelving systems, though functional for storage, often exacerbate these problems by obstructing views and contributing to a disorganized aesthetic.
Addressing these persistent issues, Loftwall, a Dallas-based manufacturer specializing in modular dividers, has introduced an innovative product named Shift. This solution was developed following extensive research, which included a cross-country trip across North America. During this journey, the company engaged in numerous conversations with designers to understand their precise needs for creating efficient and stylish open office layouts.
Bryce Stuckenschneider, CEO of Loftwall, highlighted the critical insight gained from this research: the demand for multi-functional design. Designers consistently expressed the need for products that offer several benefits due to the high premium on square footage. This feedback directly influenced the development philosophy for Shift, ensuring it would serve multiple purposes within an office setting.
Shift is a fully customizable and modular shelving system designed to give designers extensive aesthetic control. Every component, from the powder-coated frame to the panels and surfaces, can be tailored to meet specific client requirements. This adaptability allows for the integration of various features, including acoustic properties to manage sound, writable surfaces for dynamic brainstorming, and custom decorative elements for branding or aesthetic enhancement.
Steve Kinder, Loftwall’s founder, articulated the core problems Shift aims to solve: the lack of privacy and insufficient storage, both of which are common by-products of open-plan offices. The company expresses enthusiasm for the design community's feedback on Shift, which was officially made available for specification in June 2019. The complete Shift system was also showcased at NeoCon 2019 at booth #7046, providing an opportunity for industry professionals to experience its features firsthand. This product represents a thoughtful response to the evolving demands of contemporary office design, offering a versatile tool for creating more organized, private, and visually appealing workspaces.
