Are Trendy LED Light Features Worth The Investment?
The increasing popularity of LED light features, such as LED panels for ceilings, prompts an investigation into their value as a home investment. While traditional LED strips have been used for accent lighting under cabinets, behind headboards, and around mirrors, newer LED panels are being integrated into ceilings, replacing overhead fixtures to create distinct design statements. Dara Greaney, CEO of LED Light Expert, suggests that properly installed LED features can be a valuable asset for a home, emphasizing their ability to create a more pleasant ambiance than conventional lighting. He notes that distributing light from multiple, larger sources reduces harshness, offering a stylish approach to lighting that can mimic natural sunlight and modernize a space.
However, the expert also cautions that improper installation can detract from a home’s value. A tastefully integrated LED feature, such as a modern take on a ceiling light, can enhance property value, whereas a poorly affixed panel or a single panel in a large room might have the opposite effect. A key distinction highlighted is that LED ceiling panels do not provide the flushed, built-in look of recessed lighting, as they remain on the surface of the ceiling. For high ceilings, LED panels are recommended, while retrofitted can disc lights are suggested for other ceiling styles to achieve a more integrated appearance. Ultimately, the choice depends on personal aesthetic preferences, and the relative ease of installation makes LED panels a viable option for experimentation.
Installation of LED light panels can be a straightforward DIY project, especially when utilizing existing wiring and light fixture placements. Replacing an existing light fixture with an LED panel can take as little as 30 to 60 minutes, with no electrician typically required if the wiring remains unchanged. This allows homeowners to upgrade a room rapidly. However, if new wiring is necessary, the process becomes more complex, involving running wires through drywall to connect to a power source and fixture. Greaney estimates this could take 30 minutes to mount each panel and an additional one to two hours for wiring. If the power source is conveniently located near the panel installation area or if the panel is replacing a fixture, the process is less challenging, as the panel can conceal the wiring hole.
For those uncomfortable with electrical rewiring, consulting a professional electrician is advised to ensure safety and proper installation. It is also noted that wiring is primarily required for operating LED lights via a standard wall switch. Alternatively, battery-operated LED options are available, eliminating the need for wiring altogether. LED lights, in their various forms, offer a durable and energy-efficient lighting solution, capable of transforming a home’s aesthetic to a more contemporary style.
