The Light Bean is the inaugural product from San Francisco-based designer Katerina Kopytina’s studio. Each Light Bean fixture is meticulously handcrafted from American oak, allowing the natural grain of the wood to be a prominent aesthetic feature, and is complemented by a large, sculptural globe. The initial release of the Light Bean is a limited edition, with each piece individually numbered, capping the production at 100 units. Kopytina’s design ethos heavily emphasizes local sourcing and production. The Light Bean represents a new approach to systems design, prioritizing sustainability. Production occurs in small batches, employing methods that support craftsmanship—a value that can be easily overlooked in purely profit-driven manufacturing. The Light Bean offers versatility in its illumination, with three distinct bulb options: 'Cloud' for a frosted look, 'Bubble' for clear illumination, and 'Dusk' for a smoky ambiance. Furthermore, the light fixture is available in plug-in, ceiling-mounted, and wall-mounted configurations, providing extensive flexibility for placement and design integration within various spaces. In addition to the American oak version, an even more localized variant is available: the Claro Walnut Light Bean. This edition utilizes Claro Walnut, a wood native to Northern California, known for its deep tones and intricate grain patterns that display smoky purple and gold hues. This choice further highlights Kopytina’s dedication to regional materials and craftsmanship. Katerina Kopytina, originally from Moscow and with design experience in Milan, established her studio with a focus on transforming conceptual ideas into tangible products that promote a sustainable future.
