Anker Solix F3800 Plus Power Station Review: Finally, an Electric Home Backup Solution We Love
In an era of increasingly frequent power outages due to extreme weather, reliable home backup power has become essential. While gas-powered portable generators have traditionally filled this role, portable power stations are emerging as a viable alternative, particularly those with sufficient capacity for home use. The Anker Solix F3800 Plus is presented as a strong contender in this category, offering days of backup power with its 3,840 watt-hour (Wh) capacity.
This review details a three-week testing period of the Anker Solix F3800 Plus, during which it powered essential home appliances and electronics. The F3800 Plus was evaluated alongside four other portable power stations, ultimately outperforming them to become the preferred backup solution. Key specifications include a max output of 6,000W, a capacity of 3,840Wh, and a weight of 132.3 lbs. It features a comprehensive array of ports, including a 120-watt DC car accessory port, three 100-watt USB-C ports, two 12-watt USB-A ports, six AC outlets, one 240-volt outlet, and one 25 Amp RV outlet.
The testing methodology involved a series of controlled experiments and real-world usage. Initially, the power station was fully charged, and its actual watt-hour output was measured by running a space heater at a sustained 1,300 watts until the battery drained. Recharge times to 80% and 100% were also recorded. Maximum output was assessed by connecting multiple appliances to its AC outlets to reach and exceed its stated 6,000-watt capacity. After these tests, the F3800 Plus was integrated into a home setting for a week, powering a refrigerator, laptops, smartphones, power tools, and small appliances like blenders and air fryers. Its portability was also evaluated by moving it across various rooms in the home.
The Anker Solix F3800 Plus demonstrates tremendous power output, with a tested running wattage of 4,000W and a starting wattage of 6,000W, aligning with industry norms for large portable power stations. Its 3,850 Wh capacity is among the best, providing approximately 3,230 usable watt-hours, indicating an 85% efficiency rate. In practical tests, it powered a refrigerator for about 14 hours and a MacBook Pro and a second monitor for several days on a single charge. The device excels in its array of outlets, offering six AC outlets, which is more than most competitors, along with specialized ports for RVs and 240-volt appliances. It can also connect to an Anker Home Backup Panel for integration into a home's electrical system.
Solar charging capabilities are significantly upgraded in the Plus version, featuring two 165-volt solar inputs that can handle up to 3,200 watts per hour from solar panels, potentially allowing a full recharge in about an hour and a half under ideal conditions. Despite its impressive power, the F3800 Plus is notably heavy at 132.3 pounds, making it difficult to lift, though its upright design with wheels enhances portability on smooth surfaces. Its tower-like shape contributes to a smaller footprint. While its weight restricts easy transportation, it remains a viable solution for home backup, especially when paired with optional expansion packs for increased capacity up to 26,000 Wh, or when daisy-chained with another unit. For whole-home backup, it requires a smart home panel or transfer switch, which necessitates professional installation. The F3800 Plus offers a quiet and clean alternative to gas generators and is more affordable than dedicated home battery systems like Tesla's Powerwall, making it a compelling choice for reliable home backup power.
