This Charming ’50s Ranch House Captures a Glimmer of a Forgotten California
ELLE DECOR A-List designers Eric Hughes and Nathan Turner initially planned to renovate and resell a 1950s ranch house in Ojai, California, but ultimately decided to keep it as their weekend home, drawing inspiration from their childhood memories of old-school California. Both Hughes and Turner grew up in the Golden State, recalling a simpler time and a deep connection to the land through their grandparents' and great-grandparents' self-sufficient lifestyles. Turner spent his formative years on his grandparents' Sierra Nevada ranch, while Hughes's grandmother resided in a ranch house in Rancho Santa Fe. These nostalgic influences guided their approach to the Ojai property.
The couple discovered the ranch house in Ojai, located 80 miles north of Los Angeles, after their previous weekend retreat in Malibu became too crowded. The Ojai house, with its classic 1950s ranch architecture, immediately resonated with their memories. Initially, the intention was to flip the property for profit. However, as they immersed themselves in the Ojai community, engaging in local activities like hiking and biking, and forming connections with residents, they developed a profound attachment to the home and its surroundings. They realized that the house provided the 'touchstone of what old-school California is' that they both desired.
Their renovation focused on preserving the home's original character while incorporating elements that evoked a rustic, Western aesthetic. They maintained the one-inch strip oak floors in the dining room and installed reclaimed bricks in the kitchen. Shaker-style cabinets from Ikea were chosen for the kitchen, and Old West details, such as a double Dutch door and press-back wood chairs in the dining room, were added. Even the outdoor pool, fashioned from an upcycled shipping container, contributes to the 'ranch vibe.'
The design seamlessly integrates the outdoors with the indoors. Board-and-batten wood siding extends from the exterior to the interior, and closet doors feature metal barn latches. The family room ceiling is adorned with 50-year-old salvaged cedar pickets, echoing Turner's sentiment of putting the 'old ranch back into the ranch house.' The property's natural landscape, with Eden roses, mature fig, persimmon, grapefruit, tangerine, and loquat trees, further enhances the connection to nature. The guest room's Orange Crush wallpaper, designed by Turner for Wallshøppe, pays homage to Ojai’s renowned citrus groves.
While honoring the past, the designers also incorporated modern conveniences. The kitchen boasts a Thermador range, freezer drawers, and a large refrigerator. The new primary bath features a glass and steel shower enclosure and a cast-iron soaking tub. An outdoor kitchen, complete with a dining table and vintage iron candelabra, offers additional comforts. The home is filled with personal touches, including vintage jelly jars and framed mementos from Turner's great-grandfather, reflecting their shared history and making the house a cherished, personal space.
