This Designer Reupholstered IKEA Armchairs to Take a Motel From Tacky to Cottagecore

Interior designer Ashley Montgomery was tasked with renovating an eight-room motel in Canada's Beaver Valley, a property with significant potential for transformation. The motel, originally characterized by elements like giant waterfall murals, an oddly shaped faux stone fireplace, a dilapidated kitchen, and excessive wood finishes, required a major design overhaul. Montgomery collaborated with owners April Brown and Sarah Sklash, known as "moteliers" for their expertise in converting old motor inns into boutique hospitality venues, including the June Motel brand featured in a Netflix series. Their goal was to develop a renovation plan that integrated English and Canadian lodge aesthetics with contemporary comforts and vintage accents, while adhering to a budget. The outcome is the June Motel, a layered accommodation suitable for both group rentals and individual travelers seeking a cozy retreat. To achieve cohesion across guest rooms, Montgomery eliminated the waterfall murals and fake fireplaces. She implemented a repeatable design strategy featuring painted paneling, wallpaper, and built-in headboards. Vintage art was incorporated to personalize each space. In the en suite bathrooms, the existing tiling was retained to avoid plumbing modifications, though an archway was added to the shower, a design element mirrored in the entry doors. Customized sinks were sourced from Etsy, and a skirted base was added to conceal storage and introduce a soft texture. The common areas were designed with flexibility in mind, treating them as an extension of a residential home. Montgomery reconfigured entry points in the main lobby, replacing windows with double doors adjacent to a large stone fireplace. The faux stone fireplace was updated with natural materials and an expanded mantel, adorned with vintage snowshoes. Additional seating zones were created, including a sofa area, comfortable side chairs, a built-in window bench, and breakfast tables. An upstairs space with pink paneling was designed for versatile use, accommodating activities such as yoga classes, elaborate dinners, and wedding celebrations. Throughout the motel, durable and easy-to-clean wood-like vinyl planks were installed. Walls were paneled, and ceiling woodwork was stained in a dark hue. The lighting scheme prioritized warm, glowy illumination, utilizing flush mounts and sconces rather than spot lighting. A cost-effective approach to furniture involved reupholstering two IKEA Tullsta armchairs in a floral fabric by Lulie Wallace to create statement pieces for the lobby. The kitchen, initially in poor condition, was transformed to blend industrial functionality with domestic charm. It features two-tone cabinetry with open and enclosed storage, a paneled fridge, and a curtain concealing a commercial dishwasher. Montgomery intentionally selected materials like marble countertops and brass faucets that would develop a natural patina over time, emphasizing that the spaces were designed to be lived in rather than maintained in pristine condition. The designer's recent personal visit to the completed project with friends confirmed its success in providing a cozy and comfortable, home-like atmosphere. #MotelRenovation #InteriorDesign #CottagecoreStyle #BudgetRenovation #BoutiqueHospitality #VintageFinds #DIYHomeDecor #TheJuneMotel #MotelRenovation #InteriorDesign #CottagecoreStyle #BudgetRenovation #BoutiqueHospitality #VintageFinds #DIYHomeDecor #TheJuneMotel
