This 1960s West Palm Beach Bungalow Will Give You Vintage Home Collection Envy

The article details the transformation of a 1960s West Palm Beach bungalow by designer Gillian Segal for a young family. Initially acquired as a temporary residence, the family became so fond of the home's location and structural integrity that they decided to renovate it. The interiors, originally described as "neutral and bland," were given a quirky update that blended traditional Palm Beach style with West Coast and bohemian influences. The designer's approach was to create a fun and welcoming atmosphere, echoing the client's vision of an old Hollywood Hills bungalow with open windows and wind chimes. The renovation focused on cosmetic changes and furnishing for the 2,400-square-foot, three-bedroom, three-bathroom home. The kitchen was entirely revamped with new surfaces, including a custom island with intricate millwork and a built-in onyx bar, which became a focal point. Bathrooms were updated without significant structural alterations. A key element in personalizing the space was the integration of the client’s expanding vintage collection, featuring items like horn coffee tables in the living room and a set of 12 hand-carved wood and leather dining chairs from the 1960s. These vintage pieces were given prominence against a more neutral backdrop in the living room, featuring a vintage sofa covered in Italian boucle fabric. Color was introduced strategically through wall paint, such as Faded Terracotta by Farrow & Ball in the office, and patterned wallpaper in a child's room. Specific details and furnishings mentioned include Millwork paint in Sand by Farrow & Ball, a floor lamp from Hive Home, Gift, and Garden, James Bond wall art from Samuel Own Gallery, and a wicker cabinet from Show Pony Vintage in the living room. Draperies were sourced from Mac Fabrics/Terry Lynn, and a custom rug added to the unique aesthetic. Vintage items were prominent, including a gold chair and table lamp. The kitchen's custom island was crafted by JB Millwork with a countertop from Noel’s Marble. The dining area featured a vintage dining table from Show Pony Vintage, and vintage pendants, dining chairs, and a light fixture over the dining table. Sheepskins were noted as belonging to the client. The office, a consistent highlight in projects between Segal and the client, was drenched in Faded Terracotta by Farrow & Ball. Furnishings in the office included RH rugs, custom Mac Fabrics draperies, art and side tables from Hive Home, Gift, and Garden, vintage accent chairs upholstered in Manuel Canovas and Kelly Wearstler fabrics, a vintage coffee table with a Kelly Wearstler cushion, vintage Knoll desk chairs, and a vintage desk, light fixture, sofa, and sofa fabric. The powder room extended the monochromatic style with Faded Terracotta paint on the walls and vanity, a vintage mirror from Show Pony Vintage, and vintage sconces. The primary bedroom adopted a moody, monochromatic palette to highlight vintage treasures, featuring Matteo bedding, a bedside table from Show Pony Vintage, and a custom bed, headboard, and fabric made from vegetable-dyed linen from the client's garment factory. The primary bathroom included a delicate vintage sconce and curved mirrors from Mecox. Children's bedrooms incorporated vibrant elements, with one featuring Roller Rabbit wallpaper and matching bedding, and another adopting a more neutral palette with a graphic lamp from Crate & Barrel. Beds were from RH and Mac Fabrics, bedding was from Matteo, a rug from Anthropologie, and bedside tables from Show Pony Vintage. Segal emphasized that personality and richness were achieved through bold colors, special materials, and unique pieces without extensive renovations. The budget was primarily allocated to the new kitchen and vintage furnishings and art. Cost-saving measures included sourcing many local vintage items, benefiting both the budget and the environment by reducing waste, and working with craftspeople with whom existing relationships were in place. Utilizing the client's meaningful personal items, such as a hat collection, also served as a decorative and cost-effective solution. The designer also highlighted the collaborative nature of her relationship with the client, which had evolved into a friendship over multiple projects, making the design process highly interactive and enjoyable. #InteriorDesign #HomeRenovation #WestPalmBeach #BohemianStyle #VintageDecor #GillianSegal #KitchenDesign #BedroomDesign #ColorPalette #InteriorDesign #HomeRenovation #WestPalmBeach #BohemianStyle #VintageDecor #GillianSegal #KitchenDesign #BedroomDesign #ColorPalette
