How to recreate the laid back luxury vibes of The White Lotus season three hotel
The popular TV show 'The White Lotus' has gained significant attention not only for its compelling plotlines and satirical commentary but also for its sophisticated interior design, which incorporates several prominent interior design trends. The third season of the show was filmed at the Four Seasons in Koh Samui, Thailand, which is referred to as 'The White Lotus' resort within the series. The hotel's interiors are characterized by a blend of earthy textures, dark wood, and botanical prints, creating an aesthetic that balances laid-back bohemian vibes with refined sophistication.
Bill Bensley, the architect and interior designer for the Four Seasons, Koh Samui, revealed that the primary inspiration for the hotel's design came from the surrounding natural environment. Bensley emphasized his commitment to preserving the natural landscape, noting that he made numerous site visits to ensure that none of the 856 coconut palms on the property were cut down. He describes the hotel's style as 'Thai vernacular set in a tamed jungle,' highlighting nature's leading role in the design. Bensley believes that the most effective 'rooms' in a resort exist in the transitional space between the indoors and the gardens. He dedicates considerable effort to designing and maintaining the gardens, allowing them to influence the interior aesthetics, a technique he views as timeless.
The hotel's identity is deeply intertwined with its stunning scenery. While the design is heavily influenced by its tropical habitat, it also offers broader insights into using nature as an inspiration for interior design, regardless of geographic location. To recreate the 'White Lotus' aesthetic at home, Bensley advises opening up living spaces to the outdoors, if possible. This involves drawing back or eliminating drapes and reorienting furniture to make gardens or views the central focus, rather than televisions. In many of his resorts, Bensley has intentionally removed televisions to encourage a garden or view-centric room experience.
Even without a tropical backdrop, it is possible to emulate the hotel's tranquil bohemian interiors. The rooms in 'The White Lotus' resort maintain a serene atmosphere, featuring an ocean-inspired color palette and incorporating various organic textures. This laid-back feel is achieved through the extensive use of natural materials, reminiscent of bohemian bedroom concepts. To adopt this modern organic style, individuals can integrate elements such as rattan textures, wooden furniture, and natural woven fabrics like linen. Subtle patterned upholstery, particularly botanical prints, are prevalent throughout the hotel, helping to connect the interior with the external landscape through details in Roman blinds and headboards. This approach to decorating with patterns serves as an effective way to introduce natural elements into a space, evoking a sense of sun, sand, and serenity.
The design also seamlessly blends old and new elements. Intricately carved dark wood pieces, such as antique screens, daybeds, and carved panels, contribute to the hotel's sophisticated and aged aesthetic. These transitional decorating ideas are evident in areas like the Ratliffs Villa, which features vintage-style painted furniture, traditional architectural details, and antique decor. By combining these classic pieces with a contemporary color scheme and organic textures, a space can achieve an eclectic and thoughtfully curated feel. The elegant interiors of the Four Seasons, Koh Samui, provide a fitting setting for 'The White Lotus,' underscoring how an eclectic and organic design philosophy can be embraced to create luxurious and inviting spaces, even if one does not reside on a picturesque Thai island.
