Everything we know about Farrow & Ball’s new ultra-matt finish and how to use it
Farrow & Ball has launched a new ultra-matt paint finish named Dead Flat, following five years of research and development. This product is designed to address common issues associated with matt paints, such as susceptibility to scuffs and difficulty in cleaning. According to Patrick O’Donnell, Chief Colour Consultant at Farrow & Ball, Dead Flat is highly durable, wipe-clean, and easy to apply, making it suitable for high-traffic areas and imperfect wall surfaces. O'Donnell tested the paint in his own home, attesting to its user-friendly application.
The unique characteristic of Dead Flat lies in its ability to maintain a consistent 2% sheen level from all angles, unlike their existing Estate Emulsion, which only appears to have this sheen when viewed straight on. This uniform lack of reflection allows for a deeper and richer color appearance, creating a suede-like texture. The versatility of Dead Flat is a key feature, as it can be applied to a wide range of surfaces, including walls, woodwork, furniture, and even metalwork. The product is priced at £75 for 2.5 liters.
The article suggests three primary applications for the new Dead Flat finish. First, it recommends an immersive approach of painting all surfaces in a room—walls, ceilings, skirting, and fittings—with the same color. This technique creates a uniform and clean aesthetic, allowing furniture and artwork to stand out. O’Donnell notes that using a matt finish or dark color in small or poorly lit rooms can create a cozy and enveloping atmosphere.
Second, the article highlights the suitability of Dead Flat for areas prone to wear and tear, such as children's bedrooms and hallways. Its durability and wipe-clean properties make it a practical solution for surfaces that frequently encounter marks and scuffs. This feature reduces maintenance efforts and prolongs the pristine appearance of painted surfaces in busy household zones.
Finally, Dead Flat is presented as an effective solution for revitalizing unsightly radiators or worn-out furniture. Applying a few coats can transform these items. Users have the option to blend them seamlessly with the surrounding wall color for a cohesive look or to create a bold statement by using a contrasting, vibrant hue. This multi-surface capability enhances the decorative possibilities and extends the lifespan of various household elements.
