7 ways to clean your shower (and keep it that way) using natural products
Maintaining a sparkling clean shower often involves using harsh cleaning chemicals such as bleach, ammonia, and disinfectants. While these products are effective in removing soap scum and visible mold, they can negatively impact indoor air quality, especially in small spaces like bathrooms. This article explores natural and eco-friendly alternatives to clean a shower effectively, benefiting both the environment and household health.
Barb de Corti, founder of Enjo, suggests that all traditional bathroom cleaning products can be replaced with natural methods. Data from the Department of Environment and Energy indicates that indoor air pollution can be up to five times worse than outdoor air pollution, highlighting the importance of using natural cleaning solutions.
The article provides seven methods for natural shower cleaning. The first recommendation is daily wiping of the shower to prevent soap scum and mold buildup. Using a squeegee or microfibre cloth to dry surfaces after each use significantly reduces cleaning time and maintains a cleaner bathroom. Barb de Corti emphasizes keeping the bathroom as dry as possible, suggesting a blade for shower screens and a super absorbent cloth for other surfaces.
The second method involves creating natural cleaning solutions. Jessica Bragdon, co-founder of Koala Eco, advocates for versatile pantry staples like vinegar and bicarb soda. She states that these natural solutions are as effective against mold and bacteria as traditional products, noting that bleach can sometimes feed mold in porous surfaces. Koala Eco's products, for instance, are lab-tested to kill 99.9% of germs while being certified cruelty-free, allergy-safe, and non-toxic. Refillable glass spray bottles are recommended for DIY cleaners.
Thirdly, investing in shower cleaning tools can reduce manual effort. Tools like steam cleaners and motorized scrubbers are efficient for removing dirt, stains, and scum from grout and tiles. While Magic Erasers are popular for their non-toxic effectiveness, their melamine content is not biodegradable. For mosaic tiles, a mechanical scrubber is particularly useful due to numerous grout lines.
The fourth point addresses mold and mildew, emphasizing prevention as the best strategy. Consumer advocacy groups, such as Choice, recommend vinegar over store-bought mold cleaners. If mold has deeply settled into grout or silicone, replacement might be necessary, as it becomes extremely difficult to remove. Regular cleaning and drying are crucial to avoid costly renovations.
Fifthly, upgrading shower curtains and cleaning them regularly is advised. Plastic shower curtains can emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that may cause irritation. Alternatives include polyester, cotton, or hemp curtains, which require frequent washing and drying to prevent mold. A simple cleaning method for shower curtains involves soaking them in warm salty water, rinsing, and drip-drying, or machine washing with white vinegar in the rinse cycle.
Sixth, thoroughly drying the shower after cleaning is a critical step. Excess moisture leads to watermarks and mold. Using a squeegee or cloth to remove water and running an exhaust fan for 10-15 minutes after drying helps eliminate lingering moisture.
Finally, polishing fixtures and fittings enhances the shower's sparkle. For chrome taps and spindles, a solution of one part vinegar to two parts water on a microfibre cloth can remove grease, fingerprints, and soap residue. For added fragrance, essential oils like eucalyptus, peppermint, or tea-tree oil can be used. For limescale and calcium buildup, undiluted vinegar or a vinegar-bicarb soda mix is effective.
