5 Secrets To A Stylish, Kid-Friendly Living Room

The article discusses how to design a sophisticated living room that is also kid-friendly, drawing insights from New York-based designer Tharon Anderson. It emphasizes that homeowners often transition from starter furniture to investing in quality design, particularly when buying a house or starting a family. Anderson's approach focuses on combining elegance with durability to create spaces that can withstand daily family life while maintaining a high-end aesthetic. A key recommendation from Anderson is to invest in upholstery, as sofas and chairs receive constant use. She advises selecting high-quality furniture pieces with good construction to ensure longevity. For a specific project, Anderson had a 9-foot-long custom sofa and a custom-made loveseat upholstered in sophisticated tweed, incorporating a Samuel & Sons tape trim and a tight back to add elegance and formality to the room. The length of the sofa was intentionally designed to emphasize the room's dimensions and provide ample space for the entire family. Durability is a paramount concern in a kid-friendly environment. Anderson addressed this by choosing a super durable wool-polyester broadloom rug with a small-scale pattern. This type of rug is designed to withstand heavy use and effectively camouflage spills, making it practical for families with young children. For the sofa, a sage-colored Larsen fabric made of polyester and viscose was selected. This fabric mimics textured velvet but boasts a 100K double rub rating, typically reserved for hotel upholstery, guaranteeing exceptional resistance to wear and tear. Despite the robust fabric, Anderson maintained a luxurious appearance by selecting a sofa with modern, sophisticated lines. To add visual interest and personality, Anderson strategically incorporates patterns. The sofa pillows are covered in Katie Leede's 'Thebes' fabric, chosen for its painterly and whimsical feel, complemented by a fun tassel trim. Additionally, x-benches are upholstered in a jaguar print, adding a "snazzy factor" to the space. The use of a sheepskin rug introduces another layer of texture, offers a soft surface for children, and cleverly helps to hide accidental spills. Window treatments are also considered for both aesthetics and functionality. Instead of obscuring a large, bright window, Anderson chose Home Couture's 'Gypsy Dance' fabric and used it upside down to create an active bottom edge. This thoughtful detail not only enhances the room's design but also serves to conceal practical elements such as a duette shade and an unsightly radiator, which is hidden within a built-in structure below the window. Finally, the designer ensures cohesiveness through accent pieces. Brass accents are used throughout the living room, appearing on lamps, sconces, chair nail heads, and the gold coffee table. An abstract painting by Eliza Geddess further unifies the color scheme and introduces an organic element to the design. A practical feature of the coffee table, a scalloped edge, helps prevent small toys from falling onto the floor, demonstrating how design choices can cleverly integrate kid-friendly functionality with style. #KidFriendlyDesign #InteriorDesign #LivingRoomIdeas #TharonAnderson #HomeDecor #UpholsteryChoices #DurableFabrics #PatternMixing
