5 decor trends tipped to be huge this year, according to Etsy
Etsy has identified key home decor trends for 2022, highlighting a shift towards well-crafted, upscale, and inspiring pieces. The platform observed a significant 2,313% increase in searches for handmade furniture over the past three months, indicating a renewed desire among consumers to enhance their living spaces and showcase their homes. These emerging trends reflect a collective readiness to re-engage with home aesthetics, moving beyond functional necessity to embrace decorative and personal expression.
One prominent trend is 'Over-the-top texture,' building on the popularity of bouclé furniture, which has seen an 83% increase in searches for items like chairs, sofas, and ottomans. This textural emphasis extends to tufted wall art, with a 172% increase in searches, fluted or ribbed glassware, up by 38%, and paper lamps and lampshades, which increased by 23%. The data suggests a strong inclination towards incorporating varied and rich textures into home interiors.
The second trend, 'Grown-up gradients,' focuses on sophisticated accessory designs. Homeowners are anticipated to embrace decorative objects featuring gradient patterns. Dip-dye candles have seen a 62% increase in searches, while ombre or gradient art is up by 40%. A particularly notable surge is in energy-capturing aura art, which has experienced a 192% increase in searches compared to the previous year, indicating a growing interest in visually dynamic and subtly shifting color schemes.
'Statement mirrors' represent the third significant trend, with a focus on both functionality and aesthetic appeal. Asymmetrical mirrors have seen a 127% increase in searches, and tufted mirrors are up by 107%. These mirrors are used to create illusions of larger spaces, brighten dark areas, and add refined finishing touches to interiors. Etsy notes a preference for unexpected and unique mirror varieties, moving beyond traditional designs.
The fourth trend, 'Mood-boosting accents,' underscores the role of home decor in promoting wellbeing. Consumers are opting for bright and cheerful color palettes, with pastel decor searches up by 73%. There is also a strong nostalgic pull, as retro or 90s-inspired items have seen a massive 729% increase, and bright abstract art searches are up by 60%. This trend suggests that people are using home decor to create positive and uplifting environments, drawing on personal connections to color and past eras.
Finally, 'Unexpected wall art' is the fifth trend, emphasizing personalized and distinctive wall adornments. This includes incorporating cherished memorabilia and unique planters. Searches for hat hangers increased by 35%, bike wall mounts by 34%, personalized or custom shadow boxes by 32%, and hanging propagation planters by 74%. This trend encourages individuals to imbue their walls with personality and creativity, transforming them into expressive focal points rather than merely blank canvases.
