Infrared saunas: Sweating it out — in a dry heat
Thelō Home and Modern Wellness in Northampton offers a unique sauna experience distinct from traditional Finnish saunas. Located on Main Street, the establishment features a retail store for furniture, art, accessories, and interior design on its ground floor, while the lower level houses two personal sauna rooms. These saunas utilize infrared light rather than the traditional wood-heated, steam-generating methods. Infrared light, a natural component of sunlight invisible to the human eye, produces warmth. The saunas at Thelō are equipped with units behind cedar slats that emit this infrared light.
Traditional saunas typically operate at around 180 degrees Fahrenheit, using water poured over hot stones to create steam, which induces sweating. Users often cool off in a pool or shower afterward. In contrast, the infrared saunas at Thelō gradually heat up to a maximum of 145 degrees Fahrenheit, with precise temperature control via a digital panel. These saunas use dry heat, and sweating begins later in the session. Mikala Hammond, owner of Thelō, explains that this delayed sweating indicates deeper penetration of the heat due to the lower temperature. A 2015 peer-reviewed study supports this, indicating that full-spectrum infrared radiation can penetrate 3-4 centimeters (about 1.5 inches) into the subcutaneous layer of the skin, leading to vigorous sweating despite the initial delay.
Clients at Thelō are provided with water and encouraged to stay hydrated throughout their session. If the heat becomes too intense, a glass door can be opened to vent some of it. Sarah Buonocore, a 33-year-old aesthetician, shared her personal experience, stating that the infrared saunas significantly contribute to a healthier lifestyle. She began using them in November 2017 but paused due to a tumor requiring surgery and blood transfusions. After her recovery, she resumed using the saunas, primarily for detoxification and inflammation reduction, noting that she feels "lighter and healthier" with increased energy after each session. Buonocore currently attends weekly sessions for six weeks during her healing process, with plans to continue monthly afterward, setting the chromotherapy light to pink for blood cleansing.
Manufacturers of infrared saunas claim various benefits, including wrinkle reduction, weight loss, and detoxification of heavy metals and toxins, even suggesting seven times more detoxification than traditional saunas. However, Dr. Catherine Forest, a clinical assistant professor at Stanford University School of Medicine, has expressed skepticism regarding the ability to meaningfully sweat out toxins. While not all manufacturer claims are fully substantiated, several studies indicate benefits. The 2015 study, for instance, found that infrared saunas favorably assist the neuromuscular system in recovering from maximal endurance performance due to deeper heat penetration, lower temperatures, and mild humidity. Another study in the Canadian Journal of Diabetes suggested potential benefits for lowering blood pressure and waist circumference. Furthermore, research published in Clinical Rheumatology observed significant short-term beneficial effects for rheumatoid arthritis treatment without adverse effects.
Beyond these specific findings, heat therapy, in general, is recognized for its ability to provide relaxation, alleviate aches and pains, and stimulate the circulatory system. Saunas, as a form of "thermal vasodilation therapy," have also been shown to be beneficial for individuals with coronary risk factors. Ultimately, whether infrared saunas prove to be a groundbreaking wellness solution or a temporary trend, they offer a relaxing escape from daily routines.
