There’s No IKEA in This Textile Designer’s Stockholm House, Just Classic Swedish Patterns

Cathy Nordström, a textile designer based just outside of Stockholm, has meticulously crafted her family home to reflect her passion for patterns and colors, offering a distinct departure from the minimalist aesthetic often associated with Swedish design. After initially working in graphic design and then licensing her prints to large brands like Uniqlo and IKEA, Nordström decided to launch her own textile house around 2014, driven by a desire for greater creative control over the color, quality, and distribution of her work. Her home, shared with her husband Erik, their three children (Pelle, Malte, and Faye), and their dog Dixie, serves as a vibrant canvas for her designs. Central to the home's design is the kitchen, which features a deep, long banquette upholstered in a rust-and-lilac-hued checkered fabric named after her youngest daughter, Faye. This cozy nook, which Nordström jokes is deep enough for teenagers to sleep on, was a result of a collaboration with interior designer Rebecca Pitt of Inuti Design. Pitt, known for her non-traditional Scandinavian eye, helped Nordström renovate the kitchen, including relocating a refrigerator to unveil a round window and suggesting sandy stone for the counters, open shelving, and backsplash—a choice Nordström initially questioned but ultimately embraced for its warmth. This decision highlights Nordström's openness to design elements that challenge conventional Swedish aesthetics. Throughout the five-bedroom house, Nordström's patterns are seamlessly integrated into various spaces. The dining area boasts a custom-designed table by Diaform with chunky legs that mimic her pottery collection, complemented by vintage chairs reupholstered in her fabrics. The living room features a striking landscape painting by Peter Frie, alongside furniture from Bröderna Andersson and vintage pieces from Svenskt Tenn and Orrefors. Various seating arrangements are adorned with her custom cushion fabrics, such as the Kinondo Dove Blue woven fabric, adding layers of texture and visual interest. Even the private spaces, like the bedrooms and bathrooms, showcase her distinctive style. The main bedroom includes lampshades made from Nordström’s Florence fabric, a print she created after failing to find a similar pattern she inherited from her grandmother, naming it in her honor. The bathroom features her Lanka wallpaper in green, demonstrating her commitment to infusing every corner of her home with her unique artistic vision. Nordström actively involves her children in the design process, making their home a living laboratory for her textile creations. Malte's bedroom, for instance, doubled as a photoshoot location for a new wallpaper treatment, with Malte having the final say between two options. The family also carries her custom pillows on vacations, emphasizing the comfort and personal connection they have to her designs. Her collaborative spirit extends to local craftspeople, such as Philip Duniec of Diaform, who not only built the kitchen cabinets but also partners with her on bespoke furniture pieces. This approach underscores her dedication to supporting local artisans and integrating unique, handcrafted elements into her home. Nordström's design philosophy consciously moves away from the sleek, white interiors prevalent in modern Swedish design, aiming to reintroduce the rich history of color, pattern, and floral decorative painting that characterized Swedish design before the 1980s and '90s. Her home stands as a testament to this revival, showcasing a vibrant, personal, and authentic Scandinavian aesthetic rooted in tradition yet boldly contemporary. The absence of mass-produced items, particularly from IKEA, in her home, despite her past collaborations, reinforces her commitment to bespoke, unique, and artist-driven design. Each element, from fabric to furniture, tells a story of craftsmanship, personal history, and a deep appreciation for patterned textiles, creating a truly unique and inviting living space. #TextileDesign #SwedishHome #PatternDesign #HomeTour #InteriorDesign #CustomTextiles #ScandinavianDesign #FamilyHome #Craftsmanship #TextileDesign #SwedishHome #PatternDesign #HomeTour #InteriorDesign #CustomTextiles #ScandinavianDesign #FamilyHome #Craftsmanship
