Get creative with Ikea's new pre-cut fabric collection
Ikea has launched a new pre-cut fabric collection, Tyg, designed to encourage personalization and conscious living by offering a versatile way to refresh home items. Tyg, which means fabric in Swedish, features 20 distinct patterns available as three-meter pre-cut pieces. This collection is the result of a collaboration with 13 designers, showcasing a range of modern Scandinavian designs, including stripes, chequerboards, florals, and plain neutrals. The fabrics are made from 100% cotton, measure 150cm x 300cm, and are machine-washable and iron-friendly, making them suitable for numerous DIY projects.
The collection aims to inspire creativity and extend the life of existing furniture and home accessories, aligning with Ikea's broader goal of promoting conscious consumption over constant replacement. One suggested application is to create decorative covers for worn furniture, effectively concealing imperfections like stains or scratches. The fabrics can also be used to craft unique items such as decorative skirts for flower vases, achieved by sewing a drawstring into a round piece of fabric. Other creative uses include making covers for tables, designing soft furnishings like knot pillows, and enhancing home storage solutions.
A particularly popular idea highlighted by the brand is to transform the fabrics into wall art. By selecting a graphic pattern or utilizing leftover fabric pieces, individuals can staple them onto a canvas board to create immediate visual interest and personalize bland walls. Marie Olsson, range area manager of home textiles & rugs at Ikea of Sweden AB, emphasizes the brand's deep connection to textiles and its historical legacy of bold, storytelling patterns. She notes that the Tyg collection continues this tradition by integrating inspirational expressions from the participating designers, alongside the reintroduction of some timeless modern patterns from Ikea’s archives.
The Tyg collection is currently available for purchase both online and in-store. It includes 16 long-term patterns that will be available for 24 months, with an additional four patterns slated for release later in the year. This initiative provides an accessible and affordable way for customers to engage in creative projects, allowing them to update their living spaces with unique textile designs while supporting sustainable practices by repurposing and revitalizing existing items.
