Designers desperately want you to get rid of boob lights (and these 3 other outdated light fixtures!)

Light fixtures are described as the "jewelry that completes the outfit" of a room, playing a significant role in a home's aesthetic. However, certain lighting styles can make a home appear dated. Interior designers identify four types of light fixtures that homeowners should consider replacing to modernize their living spaces. First, dome-shaped glass lights, often called "boob lights," are considered a major pet peeve by designers. These fixtures are associated with a builder-grade look from the 2000s. Designers suggest replacing these with more interesting options like fixtures featuring linen or natural marble domes to create a warmer and more inviting ambiance. Second, rusty, overly intricate dining room chandeliers found in older homes are no longer in style. Designers recommend swapping these for modern alternatives such as glass or rattan fixtures, depending on the home's overall vibe. Brass chandeliers with polished glass, especially those with ornate details and faux candlestick bulbs, are seen as outdated and overly formal. A more thoughtful alternative proposed is vintage light fixtures from the 1950s, made of genuine, unlacquered brass with opal or Murano glass shades. Unlacquered brass is favored because it develops a beautiful patina over time, offering an organic and understated elegance that improves with age, contrasting with the shinier, newer counterparts. Third, track lighting, frequently used in basements, is criticized for its sterile feel. As an alternative, designers suggest incorporating a mix of floor and table lamps to make these spaces feel cozier and more inviting. The emphasis is on choosing lighting that reflects personal style rather than a generic, functional approach. Finally, fixtures with clear glass shades or exposed bulbs are also deemed problematic. Designers express discomfort with the aesthetic of exposed bulbs and highlight the maintenance hassle of cleaning clear shades. They advise against these fixtures or recommend making aesthetic changes, such as swapping out clear shades for opaque milk glass or colored glass. In some instances, it may be possible to simply change the shades without needing to replace the entire fixture, providing a simpler update. #LightFixtures #HomeDecor #InteriorDesign #ModernHome #DecoratingTips #LightingDesign #HomeImprovement #OutdatedFixtures #LightFixtures #HomeDecor #InteriorDesign #ModernHome #DecoratingTips #LightingDesign #HomeImprovement #OutdatedFixtures
