Community spotlight: Kitchen Culture — Shop local and cook together

Kitchen Culture is a kitchen-focused consignment store located on SE Foster Road in Portland, offering a unique space for the community to buy and sell used kitchenware, learn new culinary skills, and connect with neighbors. Opened in November 2022 by Traci Hildner, the store provides an affordable and sustainable option for acquiring high-quality kitchen items. Hildner's inspiration for Kitchen Culture stemmed from the idea that if second-hand markets exist for cars, music, movies, and books, they should also exist for kitchen supplies, promoting resourcefulness and reducing waste. The store's inventory is constantly changing, featuring a wide selection of used and new cookware, dinnerware, glassware, kitchen tools, and cookbooks. Beyond retail, Kitchen Culture serves as a community hub by hosting cooking and food preservation classes. These classes cover various topics, including canning and fermentation, reflecting Traci Hildner's extensive background in food preservation. She became a Master Food Preserver and Family Food Educator for Oregon State Extension Services in 2014, driven by her experience with an abundant edible garden and a desire to minimize food waste. Kitchen Culture emphasizes durability and functionality, offering individual pieces of silverware and dishware to allow customers to buy only what they need. Traci Hildner recommends a selection of essential kitchen tools for longevity, including a good knife, butcher block, frying pan, stock pot, wooden spoons, and a vegetable peeler. The store also operates on a consignment model, allowing individuals to sell their unused kitchenware, earning half of the sale price after a 90-day consignment period. This system not only provides income for sellers but also ensures that quality items find new homes, contributing to a circular economy. For those interested in food preservation, Kitchen Culture's classes are a significant draw. Hildner's teaching experience extends to various institutions and markets, and her current offerings can be found on the store's website. These classes are designed to empower individuals with the skills to preserve food at home. Furthermore, Kitchen Culture collaborates with local initiatives like Kitchen Share, Portland's kitchen tool lending library, allowing students to borrow equipment like dehydrators or large canning pots before committing to a purchase. This partnership encourages experimentation and reduces the initial cost barrier for those exploring food preservation. Traci Hildner also actively engages with the community by organizing meals for local shelters through the Foster-Powell Neighborhood Association, embodying the spirit of sharing and community that inspired the name "Kitchen Culture." #CommunitySpotlight #KitchenCulture #ShopLocal #SecondHandKitchenware #FoodPreservationClasses #PortlandOregon #SustainableLiving #ConsignmentStore #ResourcefulPDX #CommunitySpotlight #KitchenCulture #ShopLocal #SecondHandKitchenware #FoodPreservationClasses #PortlandOregon #SustainableLiving #ConsignmentStore #ResourcefulPDX
