Smeg Says Teal, and We’re Listening — The Kitchen Shade of the Year Is Here

The article discusses Smeg's declaration of "Jade Green," a dusty teal with Mediterranean undertones, as the kitchen color of the year for 2025. This choice follows other prominent color declarations, such as KitchenAid's "Butter" for kitchen cabinet trends. Smeg, known for its vibrant appliance aesthetics, has introduced this shade, which is described as less like a traditional gemstone jade and more akin to the waters of the Amalfi coastline. The increasing prominence of teal and turquoise in kitchen design is attributed to a broader trend moving away from the minimalist and neutral palettes that have dominated interior design for several years. Charlotte-based designer Cate Gutter of CWG Design and Karen Olle, marketing director at Smeg USA, both highlight this shift towards bolder, more expressive colors in the kitchen. They note that consumers are seeking ways to make their kitchen spaces more personal and visually engaging. The specific hue chosen by Smeg, "Jade Green," is characterized as calming and evocative of spring. This softness is a key aspect of its appeal, as it allows for the integration of color without being overtly bright or overwhelming. The psychological impact of this shade is also emphasized; it taps into a desire for spaces that feel connected to nature, offering a grounded and serene atmosphere. This makes the color a suitable choice for those looking to infuse their homes with a sense of peace and vibrancy. Steven Rodel, creative director of Guy Goodfellow, suggests that teal is most effective when used subtly. He has incorporated Farrow & Ball’s “Green Smoke No. 47” in cabinetry to achieve a rustic yet modern feel. For individuals not ready for a full repaint, Rodel advises using teal in highlight elements like dishes and bowls. The versatility of teal is highlighted, as it complements a wide range of materials such as natural woods, unlacquered brass, handmade ceramics, and even stainless steel, demonstrating its adaptability in various kitchen aesthetics. The article also provides specific product recommendations for incorporating "Jade Green" and similar teal tones into the kitchen. These include Smeg's '50s Retro-Style 2-Slice Toaster in Jade Green, which is presented as a low-commitment option to test the trend. Other suggestions include Le Creuset’s salt mill in "Sea Salt" for subtle accents, Fazeek’s Geo Cake Stand with its tonal teal and lilac design, Vietri Nuovo stemless wine glasses for a touch of summer energy, Villeroy & Boch Lave Dinner Plates in a seaside teal, and Staub’s Ceramic 2 Piece Rectangular Baking Dish Set in Rustic Turquoise. These items offer different ways to introduce the color, from small decorative pieces to functional kitchenware, catering to various levels of commitment to the trend. The overall message is that this teal shade is both timeless and transformative, offering a fresh approach to modern kitchen design. #Smeg #ColorOfTheYear #KitchenDesign #TealGreen #InteriorTrends #HomeDecor #ApplianceColors #DesignInspiration #Smeg #ColorOfTheYear #KitchenDesign #TealGreen #InteriorTrends #HomeDecor #ApplianceColors #DesignInspiration
