Talking interiors with Louise Redknapp – the singer, Strictly star and furniture designer shares her design secrets
Louise Redknapp, known for her girl-next-door charm and impeccable fashion sense, shares insights into her interior design preferences and her collaboration with Harveys on a furniture collection named 'BOLD by Louise'. Redknapp describes her ideal home as a blend of modern and traditional elements, eschewing a 'cottage' style in favor of large Victorian homes with original features like flooring and fireplaces. She prefers to infuse these classic structures with contemporary furnishings, such as a large sofa, complemented by unique vintage finds from markets, like an original 70s chair or coffee table. This eclectic approach allows her to create spaces that possess personality and a sense of history while remaining current.
Her favorite room in her home is the lounge, which she identifies as the central hub where her sons, Charley and Beau, and their friends congregate after grabbing food from the kitchen. This communal aspect influences her decorating style, which she describes as minimal. Redknapp avoids clutter, focusing on key central pieces like sofas and armchairs. She has a particular aversion to overly bright colors, opting instead for a neutral base with dark floors and polished cement walls. Color is introduced through soft furnishings, art, and strategically placed lighting, which she considers massively important for creating atmosphere. She openly admits her reluctance to use bold wall colors, stating she lacks the 'guts' for a pink wall.
The collaboration with Harveys for the 'BOLD by Louise' collection began when the company approached her. Redknapp emphasizes that it was a hands-on design process, not merely an endorsement. She worked closely with the head designer and head buyer, creating mood boards and discussing her vision for furniture that would stand the test of time, much like fashion. Her initial design inspiration was grey, a color she loves for sofas and contemporary homes, and velvet was a must-have fabric. The collection also incorporates up-and-coming colors like emerald green, chosen for its sophisticated, 'Soho House' feel, and a blush pink sofa envisioned for a bedroom setting. A key focus was creating furniture that looks expensive and offers good value without being overly shiny or sparkly.
Practicality also played a significant role in her design choices, especially as a mother of two boys and three dogs. She prioritized easy-to-clean fabrics, recounting an anecdote about her nine-year-old's yogurt spills on the sofa. The 'BOLD by Louise' range includes 18 different colors and fabrics, all selected for their durability and ease of maintenance, even luxurious materials like green velvet, which can be cleaned with a Hoover and sponge.
Redknapp shares a past decorating mistake involving an expensive, stylish orange leather chair that, to her friends, resembled a Halloween decoration. This anecdote highlights the importance of considering how pieces fit into the overall aesthetic. Her primary decorating tip is to focus on lighting to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. She prefers candles and freestanding lamps to achieve a cozy ambiance, disfavoring chandeliers in favor of solid, statement-making lighting fixtures.
