ODA’s Chelsea Mercantile lobby in Manhattan makes a grand entrance

ODA, an architectural practice known for its comprehensive approach to developing, designing, and thinking, has completed a transformative renovation of the Chelsea Mercantile lobby in Manhattan. The project involved uniting three pre-war buildings, dating back to 1908, into a cohesive and elegant entrance space. This 19-storey Chelsea Mercantile, formerly a garment industry and textile manufacturing site on 7th Avenue, presented a unique challenge due to its patchwork architectural history and an irregularly shaped 8,000 sq ft lobby. The firm's primary objective was to seamlessly stitch together this complex space, making it highly functional while simultaneously honoring the building's industrial heritage and creating a visually compelling environment. Ryoko Okada, director of interiors at ODA and head of the project, drew inspiration from the building's past as a textile manufacturing hub. The design concept revolves around the imagery of spools of fabric and traditional tailoring methods. This influence is evident in the organically shaped walls, which are designed to resemble fabric spools, guiding visitors through a sequence of discovery within the lobby. ODA aimed to elevate the lobby beyond a mere transitional area, envisioning it as a space with its own inherent importance, capable of making a strong statement, much like the building's grand façade. The interior design achieves a heady and atmospheric ambiance through a thoughtful selection of materials and lighting. A vintage glass lamp serves as a focal point in the seating area, while the mailroom incorporates a curved wall of black metal mailboxes, adding a touch of 1950s glamour to an otherwise mundane task. The circulation within the lobby is enhanced by robust base materials, notably the honed nublado light marble with a chevron pattern from Stone Source, which covers the floor. A metallic ceiling contributes subtle reflections, adding depth to the densely designed interior. The walls play a crucial role in directing movement and defining distinct zones, with a sophisticated interplay of textures and finishes. Flat and rippled maple and walnut panels are juxtaposed with curved metal panels featuring a rose finish by Amuneal, and ribbed glass is used in the mailroom, further enriching the material palette and creating a dynamic visual experience. The renovation successfully transforms the Chelsea Mercantile lobby into an elegant and functional space that pays homage to its historical context while offering a sophisticated modern aesthetic. The design elements, from the conceptual inspiration drawn from the garment industry to the meticulous selection of materials and lighting, collectively create a grand and inviting entrance that holds its own significance within the building's overall identity. The project exemplifies ODA's ability to integrate historical narrative with contemporary design solutions, resulting in a unique and memorable architectural intervention. #ODAArcitecture #ChelseaMercantile #LobbyDesign #ManhattanArchitecture #InteriorDesign #ArchitecturalRenovation #TextileIndustryInspired #LuxuryInteriors #ODAArcitecture #ChelseaMercantile #LobbyDesign #ManhattanArchitecture #InteriorDesign #ArchitecturalRenovation #TextileIndustryInspired #LuxuryInteriors
