9 Colors That Designers Say Will Make Your Kitchen Look Much More Expensive

The power of color significantly influences the perception of a space, from evoking emotions to altering its perceived size. When aiming to create an elevated, high-end kitchen, strategic color selection is paramount. Designers identify several shades that can instantly enhance a kitchen's aesthetic, making it appear more expensive without necessarily incurring high costs. Black and white is a classic combination that immediately conveys luxury. This timeless palette is best utilized with varied textures to prevent a flat appearance. Christina Garcia of Layered Dimensions Interior Design suggests pairing matte black with natural white oak for depth and sophistication, accented by brass and crisp white countertops for a tailored, upscale feel. Mike Whitfield of LUSSO agrees, noting that black and white are ideal for modern, minimalist luxury kitchens, especially when complemented by marble tiles and brushed nickel or matte black taps. Neutral and natural tones, like wood and stone, further elevate the aesthetic, while bright colors are generally avoided as they can detract from the luxurious feel. Rich greens, particularly deep, forest-inspired hues, are another timeless choice that makes a kitchen feel high-end. These restful and easy-to-live-with shades create a sociable, cocoon-like atmosphere. Tom Howley, design director at Tom Howley, recommends incorporating regal greens with nature-inspired patterns, suggesting inspiration from heritage designs. Pastels, while recently overshadowed by deeper tones, are experiencing a comeback. Soft sky blue, matcha green, and baby pink can introduce individuality and a sense of assurance without being overly sweet. Mike Whitfield points out that light, airy pastel shades, especially blues, greens, and neutrals, foster a cozy yet luxurious traditional ambiance, which can be enhanced with brushed gold or aged bronze fixtures. Stormy blue blacks, particularly those with green hints, offer a sense of class and timeless sophistication. These deep, almost black, shades pair effectively with rich greens, providing a stylish and elevated aesthetic. Al Bruce, founder of Olive & Barr, notes that navy and dark green kitchens create depth, balance, and a dramatic edge, allowing other materials like cabinetry hardware, stone, and wood to stand out. If a fully dark palette is too much, these tones can be introduced through elements like tiling or worktops. Warm brass and bronze shades are essential for adding a premium finish through smaller details. Beyond cabinet colors, hardware like taps, cabinet pulls, and drawer handles in brass, bronze, or brushed gold can significantly elevate the space. Al Bruce highlights the rising popularity of brass worktops, especially on feature islands, for their richness and jewel-box effect. Gareth Hull, design lead at Hendel & Hendel, emphasizes that hardware choices are crucial for defining the space's tone, with warmer metals like dark brushed brass bringing depth and richness, particularly when combined with natural materials or muted cabinetry. Neutral colors, including shades of white and brown, also contribute to an expensive look by allowing architectural details and textures to shine. Jennie Bishop of Bishop Studio advocates for stylish restraint, using creamy cabinetry, moody stone, and black accents for an edgy yet elegant mix. She emphasizes the impact of natural materials like veined marble, which act as "nature's own wallpaper." Ash McCullough, lead designer at Blakes London, suggests natural colored stains on timbers to reveal rich textures and dramatic veining in natural marbles for worktops and backsplashes, noting that more dramatic veins indicate a more expensive stone. Brown, particularly soft, latte shades, is re-emerging as a sophisticated choice. Bare wooden cabinetry, especially in rich timbers like walnut, paired with warm metallic finishes, works well. Kathy Kuo, an interior designer, recommends Benjamin Moore's 'Swiss Coffee' for its versatility, as its slight green undertone allows it to harmonize with both cool and warm tones, making it ideal for a luxurious kitchen. Finally, white, though sometimes considered unimaginative, offers a diverse array of varieties. The key to avoiding a stark finish is incorporating ample texture and selecting shades with subtle undertones. Andrea Schumacher, an interior designer, suggests adding pattern or texture, such as soft gray shiplap or woven wall coverings, or utilizing architectural details like dramatic ceiling beams or large-scale windows to create an elevated, gallery-like atmosphere. The most appealing kitchen color ultimately depends on individual aesthetic preferences and how effectively colors are layered with other design elements. #KitchenDesign #InteriorDesign #ColorTrends #LuxuryKitchens #HomeDecor #DesignTips #MaterialSelection #Cabinetry #KitchenRenovation #KitchenDesign #InteriorDesign #ColorTrends #LuxuryKitchens #HomeDecor #DesignTips #MaterialSelection #Cabinetry #KitchenRenovation
