Nesting propels growth at 12-man Wooded Hollow
Wooded Hollow Inc., a cabinet shop in Payson, Utah, has experienced significant growth and increased productivity by embracing CNC nesting technology. Owner Jady Day initially invested in an Omnitech CNC router and KCD Cabinet CNC Commander software in 2008, aiming to expand his business without increasing payroll. This strategic move proved highly successful, leading to sales reaching $2.5 million and transforming the company's operations.
Before adopting CNC technology, the process of preparing parts for a kitchen cabinet involved a full day's work or more for one employee using a table saw and boring machine. With the implementation of nesting, this time was dramatically reduced to half a day for the same volume of parts, while also minimizing rejects. The CAD/CAM software plays a crucial role in streamlining job scheduling and management, offering enhanced production flexibility and enabling on-the-fly design modifications based on customer needs.
Jady Day founded Wooded Hollow in 2005 as a two-person operation, building a reputation for custom cabinets, countertops, fireplace mantels, and furniture. As demand grew, he recognized the necessity of investing in CNC technology to maintain pace. Despite having no prior CAD/CAM experience, he was recommended KCD Software, which, after an initial learning curve, proved user-friendly. The software generates G-code and tool paths, allowing operators to initiate cutting with a single button press. The ease of training employees on the software also contributed to increased efficiency.
Beyond just cabinet parts from thermally fused laminated particleboard, Wooded Hollow utilizes KCD Commander and the routers to precisely machine MDF raised panel doors and drawer fronts. This accuracy has eliminated issues with mis-sized doors, a common problem when door lists were created manually. The integration of KCD Software's optimized touchscreen technology with Microsoft Surface tablets further revolutionized shop floor operations. Employees can access layouts and shop drawings digitally, marking off completed parts in real-time, which allows Day to monitor job progress instantly without needing to print documents.
KCD Software also serves as an effective sales tool. Day can create 3D renderings for customers after initial consultations, allowing them to review and request changes to colors, decorative elements, or hardware. The ability to instantly swap colors on a screen is particularly valuable for customers deciding on contrasting elements, such as a different colored kitchen island. The detailed 3D renderings provide customers with a precise visual of their final product, minimizing uncertainties. The success with the initial CNC setup led to the acquisition of a second Omnitech router, which further doubled nesting capacity and opened new revenue streams, such as job-shop work for a retail store fixture manufacturer. This additional revenue stream alone covered the cost of the second router within a year. Wooded Hollow's ongoing objective is to enhance efficiency, minimize errors, and expand production volume with its existing team, with KCD Software and nesting technology being central to achieving continuous improvement and growth.
