MVRDV: the cloud

The architectural firm MVRDV has unveiled their design for 'the cloud,' a pair of residential high-rises slated for the Yongsan Dreamhub masterplan in Seoul, Korea. These towers, reaching heights of 260 and 300 meters, are designed to be connected at the 27th floor by a multi-story volume. This connecting element, spanning ten floors, is intended to visually evoke a pixelated cloud, serving as a distinctive architectural feature. Breaking from traditional high-rise design where public spaces are often at the base, MVRDV's 'the cloud' elevates these amenities. The public green space, conceptualized by Cambridge and London-based landscape architect Martha Schwartz, is situated at ground level. This allows residents and visitors to access green areas immediately upon entering the complex. Express elevators will provide direct access from the ground level to the connecting 'cloud' structure. Within this elevated 'cloud,' a comprehensive range of facilities is planned across its 14,000 square meters. These include a sky lounge, multiple restaurants and cafes, and a conference center. For recreation and well-being, the 'cloud' will also house wellness and fitness studios. The various shifting cubic volumes that form the cloud structure will be topped with vegetated gardens, sun decks, and swimming pools, offering elevated outdoor spaces for relaxation and social interaction. Upon returning to ground level from these elevated amenities or after a stroll through the gardens, residents will enter their respective towers through a lobby. Townhouses are also integrated into the ground level, offering diverse housing options within the complex. The residential units themselves vary significantly in size, ranging from 80 to 260 square meters, catering to different lifestyle needs. These apartments are designed with features such as double-story ceilings, private patios, and gardens, enhancing the living experience. A notable design aspect is the inclusion of four corner units that will provide panoramic views of the city. These units, situated at the corners of the square building footprints, are engineered to facilitate cross ventilation and ensure a variety of natural daylight conditions throughout the day. For those seeking expansive living, the complex will feature 1200 square meter penthouses, each equipped with its own personal roof terrace. In addition to residential spaces, the project incorporates a 9,000 square meter officetel program, blending office and hotel functionalities within the development. The projected completion date for 'the cloud' is 2015, introducing a unique blend of residential, commercial, and public spaces into Seoul's urban landscape. #MVRDV #SeoulArchitecture #ResidentialHighrises #YongsanDreamhub #CloudDesign #UrbanPlanning #MixedUseDevelopment #SkyLounge #ArchitecturalInnovation #MVRDV #SeoulArchitecture #ResidentialHighrises #YongsanDreamhub #CloudDesign #UrbanPlanning #MixedUseDevelopment #SkyLounge #ArchitecturalInnovation
