Veronika Gombert's Umleiter lamp hangs offset from its ceiling rose
The Umleiter lamp, created by German industrial designer Veronika Gombert, addresses a common problem in interior design: illuminating areas of a room not directly beneath a pre-existing electrical ceiling point without resorting to unsightly ceiling cables or fixed hooks. Gombert designed this suspension light to offer flexibility in lighting placement, allowing users to position the light precisely where it is needed, rather than being restricted by the electrical outlet's location. The initial concept for the Umleiter lamp emerged in 2011 when Gombert faced a similar challenge in her own apartment, where the existing electricity outlets did not align with her furniture arrangement and interaction areas. Observing this recurring issue in many households, she sought to develop a practical and aesthetically pleasing solution.
The innovative design replaces traditional pendant light wiring that might run conspicuously across the ceiling with a 1,500-millimetre metal tube. This tube extends from the electricity point, carrying the wiring discreetly to a conical lampshade. One end of the tube rests against the ceiling, while a steel wire supports the other end. This steel wire is fully adjustable, enabling users to modify the angle of the tube and, consequently, the position of the light source. The Umleiter lamp is engineered for remarkable versatility, offering 360-degree rotation and movement in three dimensions. It can be positioned anywhere within a one-meter radius of the power supply point, providing extensive reach and adaptability. Additionally, the height of the hand-spun conical lampshade can be adjusted, further enhancing its functional flexibility to suit various lighting needs and room layouts.
Gombert emphasized her design philosophy, stating that she aimed for a tool-like object rather than merely a decorative lamp. Her goal was to create a solution that allows for adaptability, such as when furniture is rearranged or a table is extended to accommodate more people. She highlighted the product's ability to fulfill the fundamental purpose of a lamp – providing light precisely where it is required – in a flexible and user-friendly manner. Gombert acknowledged the simplicity of her solution to a common, yet often overlooked, problem and expressed curiosity about the public's reception. The Umleiter lamp is available in three distinct finishes: red-painted aluminium, black-painted aluminium, and mirror-polished brass, offering aesthetic choices to complement different interior styles.
