Arbour linear light by Ross Gardam
Melbourne-based designer Ross Gardam has introduced the Arbour linear light, a new lighting fixture crafted from solid hardwood. This pendant lamp, measuring over two metres in length, is designed with a curved profile to serve as a natural focal point within interior spaces, promoting interaction and unity among people. Gardam emphasizes the importance of context in product design, aiming for the Arbour light to accent various interiors effectively.
The Arbour linear light is manufactured in Melbourne, with each piece of timber, available in solid walnut, maple, or oak, carefully machined to achieve a precise finish. The lighting mechanism itself is housed within a hand-polished champagne anodised aluminium shell, which is then enveloped by the timber body. The light is offered in two sizes: a 2,200-millimetre version and a shorter 1,850-millimetre option.
Gardam highlighted the collaborative process with manufacturers and the crucial role of advanced technology in bringing the Arbour design to fruition. The use of five-axis machining was essential for creating the complex form of the light, a level of intricacy that would not be achievable through traditional timber processing methods. This technological integration allowed for a more sophisticated and refined aesthetic.
Ross Gardam is a furniture and lighting designer operating from Melbourne. His work, including the Arbour linear light, is showcased on Dezeen Showroom, a platform that provides an accessible space for brands to present new products and designs to a global audience. The Arbour linear light exemplifies Gardam's commitment to craftsmanship, material quality, and innovative manufacturing techniques in contemporary design.
