The future of interactivity in the living room
YouTube has launched a new feature designed to enhance the interactive experience of watching content on TV screens. This innovation addresses the challenge of integrating the rich features of YouTube, such as liking, commenting, subscribing, and supporting creators, into the TV viewing environment, which typically lacks the intuitive navigation of smaller devices like smartphones. The design team recognized that while the YouTube app for TV has grown significantly since its 2010 launch, with viewers watching over 700 million hours daily on TV by January 2022, the user experience for interactive elements remained a hurdle due to remote control limitations, lack of built-in web browsers, and the full-screen video format.
The core insight driving this new feature is that over 80% of people use another digital device while watching TV. Further research revealed that many users were already engaging with YouTube content on their mobile phones simultaneously while watching the same video on their TV. This observation led to a strategic shift: instead of trying to cram all interactive features onto the TV screen, the focus moved to deeply connecting the mobile phone with the TV viewing experience. This approach leverages the familiarity and ease of use of smartphones for interactive tasks.
The new feature allows users to effortlessly connect their iOS or Android phone to their TV. To use it, both the phone and TV must be signed in to the same YouTube account. When the YouTube app is opened on the TV, a prompt automatically appears on the phone, allowing users to connect the devices. Once synchronized, the phone acts as an all-purpose interactive device, enabling viewers to perform actions like reading video descriptions, leaving comments, sharing videos, and supporting creators through Super Chat or channel memberships, all from their phone while the video continues to play on the larger screen.
This development signifies a step towards a more interactive living room experience. YouTube plans to expand upon this foundation, with future designs for video watch pages that aim to incorporate more unique YouTube features, such as browsing and shopping for products featured in videos, directly onto the TV screen. This would allow viewers to decide when to pick up their phone for deeper engagement, creating a seamless and integrated viewing and interaction ecosystem between the TV and mobile device.
