Old Is New Again: Designers Say These 6 Retro Design Trends Are Defining 2025 Style

The world of interior design frequently cycles through trends, bringing back elements from the past with renewed appeal. This article explores six retro design trends that interior designers identify as making a significant comeback in contemporary homes. These trends offer a blend of nostalgia and modern functionality, moving beyond outdated fads to introduce fresh perspectives. One prominent trend is the re-emergence of glass blocks. Once considered a staple of interior cool, glass blocks are now valued for their ability to create spatial separation while allowing light to flow through. Designers like Cecile Gottlich highlight their aesthetic value, noting their capacity to add texture, color, and architectural detail to any space. This revival is particularly relevant as open-concept layouts are becoming less popular, making glass blocks an ideal solution for subtle division. Another trend gaining traction is the use of cork tiles for both flooring and walls. Gottlich emphasizes cork's environmental benefits, citing its sustainability, biodegradability, and carbon absorption properties. Modern cork tiles have evolved to offer a wider range of looks and colors, including marbled finishes, making them suitable for various interior styles, from modern to rustic. Their functionality and ability to add warmth and texture contribute to their renewed popularity. Wood-on-wood decor, or "wood washing," is also making a comeback, albeit with a contemporary twist. While the 1960s and 1970s saw an abundance of dark, heavy wood in interiors, today's trend, as described by Zoë Bailey, focuses on lighter-toned woods and slimmer, often mid-century modern furniture pieces. This approach creates a more minimalist and comforting atmosphere, aligning with a growing desire for a stronger connection to nature through design. Checkerboard flooring, reminiscent of 1950s diners, has been reinterpreted for modern homes. Rebecca Winter points out that while traditional black and white or red and white checks remain, newer iterations incorporate fresh color combinations like sage and cream or navy and sand. This bold yet simple graphic pattern offers a timeless appeal, adding interest to entryways, kitchens, and bathrooms. Available in materials such as marble, ceramic, and vinyl, it provides a touch of nostalgia without appearing dated. Skirted detailing is another retro element returning to prominence, signaling a shift from sleek lines to more flowy, feminine, and traditional styles. Gottlich explains that flounces, frills, fringes, and box pleats add a whimsical and soft touch to furniture and spaces. Beyond skirted furniture, custom fabric skirts can be added to existing pieces like stools, coffee tables, kitchen cabinets, or even islands, offering an easy way to embrace this aesthetic. Finally, colored bathrooms are experiencing a resurgence, moving beyond the monochromatic white and neutral tones that have long dominated. Bailey notes that while avocado green bathroom suites are best left in the past, contemporary colored bathrooms feature sophisticated palettes, including dramatic dark tones like deep greens and earthy shades, alongside occasional pops of brighter colors. This trend reflects a growing confidence among clients to incorporate bolder hues into their private spaces. #RetroDesignTrends #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #GlassBlocks #CorkTiles #WoodWashing #CheckerboardFlooring #SkirtedDetailing #ColoredBathrooms #DesignRevival #RetroDesignTrends #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #GlassBlocks #CorkTiles #WoodWashing #CheckerboardFlooring #SkirtedDetailing #ColoredBathrooms #DesignRevival
