How to fix sun-damaged furniture - 3 hacks to restore surfaces after climate ‘milestone'

The sun's intense UV rays can cause significant damage to household furniture and surfaces, even indoors. This damage is particularly prevalent in the UK due to recent unusually hot weather, branded a “milestone in UK climate history” by the Met Office. Thompson Creek Window Company highlights that UV rays can fade bright colors and cause permanent discoloration or darkening of wood, emphasizing the need to consider furniture placement in sunlit rooms. Paintwork, especially on the exterior of a property, is susceptible to heat damage. High temperatures can lead to bubbling, chipping, and flaking, which can create openings for moisture and potential mold growth. For small damaged areas, a simple fix involves brushing off peeling paint, priming the surface, and repainting, provided the surrounding edges are stable. Wooden surfaces are also highly vulnerable. Clear glass windows allow up to 70% of UV rays to pass through, and even energy-efficient windows only reduce this by about 10%. While some wooden furniture comes with UV-protective sealants, existing damage can often be remedied. Wood polishes or oil-based waxes are effective for reviving color or evening out discoloration. Natural options like coconut oil, beeswax, or a mixture of olive oil and beeswax can be used on items such as front doors, indoor and outdoor furniture, and flooring. For outdoor surfaces like decking that peel and crack, re-staining with a protective coating is recommended after thoroughly stripping the old layer. Hardwood floors can swell, buckle, or fill gaps under baseboards due to temperature fluctuations, necessitating immediate repair to prevent permanent damage. Fabrics are prone to sun damage, which can cause a bleaching effect. Faded upholstery can be restored by spot-treating with a stain remover or a homemade solution of white vinegar, water, and rubbing alcohol. A mixture of half a cup each of rubbing alcohol and vinegar with one cup of water, applied with a spray bottle, left to dry, and then washed off with warm water and dish soap, can be effective. Machine-washable items should be laundered as appropriate. #SunDamage #FurnitureRestoration #UVProtection #HomeMaintenance #PaintRepair #WoodCare #FabricRestoration #DIYHacks #HeatwaveImpact #SunDamage #FurnitureRestoration #UVProtection #HomeMaintenance #PaintRepair #WoodCare #FabricRestoration #DIYHacks #HeatwaveImpact
