Houzz Identifies 10 Bathroom Design Trends You’ll Want To Incorporate

The 2025 U.S. Houzz Bathroom Trends Study provides comprehensive insights into current homeowner preferences for bathroom design and renovation. The report highlights motivations behind bathroom projects, identifies areas within homes that are being repurposed for new bathrooms, and details popular styles, features, colors, and materials. Marine Sargsyan, Houzz staff economist and home trends expert, emphasizes the significant shift towards horizontal stack tile patterns in showers, which now account for 18% of renovations, an increase of 5 percentage points from the previous year. While horizontal brick remains the leading choice at 31%, vertical stack tiles are a close second at 20%. Space expansion is a notable trend, with almost a third of homeowners (31%) adding new structures to enlarge their bathrooms. Additionally, 22% are converting closets, and 20% are repurposing bedrooms to create or expand bathrooms. Other less common sources for new bathroom space include hallways (9%) and laundry rooms (8%), with a minimal 3% drawing from other bathrooms, garages, or basements, and only 1% from kitchens. For window treatments, frosted glass is the most preferred option, chosen by 27% of homeowners for privacy and aesthetic reasons. Roman shades are selected by 10%, while faux-wood blinds, curtains (7% each), window film, and motorized shades (5% each) are less common. Lighting preferences show recessed lighting as the most popular at 40%, although its selection has decreased by 4 percentage points year over year. Ceiling lights and sconces are equally favored at 34% each, with wall lights chosen by 33%. The rise of wet rooms is significant, now representing 16% of renovated bathrooms, a 3 percentage point increase from the previous year. Homeowners opt for wet rooms primarily to optimize space (50%), for aesthetic appeal (29%), and to enhance accessibility (26%). Accessibility, in general, is a major consideration, with 68% of homeowners factoring in special needs, anticipating future requirements within five years (47%) or addressing immediate needs of household members (31%). Regarding bathtub styles in wet rooms, freestanding flat-bottom tubs are preferred by 57% of homeowners, significantly more than alcove tubs (27%). Other less popular options include freestanding claw-foot tubs (6%), deck-mounted tubs (4%), and corner tubs (4%). The dominant aesthetic in bathroom renovations is transitional style (22%), followed by contemporary (18%) and modern (16%), while traditional style remains steady at 11%. Wellness and self-care features are increasingly important, with 25% of homeowners using their primary bathroom for relaxation and 24% for beauty treatments. This is supported by features like upgraded lighting (30%), soaking tubs or spa baths (18%), and water features (13%). Finally, neutral colors dominate wall choices, with white being the top pick for showers (36%) and non-shower areas (25%), though its popularity has slightly decreased. Off-white (18%), gray (11%), beige (8%), and blue (7%) are other preferred colors for shower walls, while for non-shower walls, off-white (21%), gray (12%), and equal percentages for beige and blue (9% each) are chosen. #BathroomDesign #HomeRenovation #HouzzTrends #TilePatterns #WetRooms #AccessibilityDesign #TransitionalStyle #WellnessFeatures #NeutralColors #HomeDecoration #BathroomDesign #HomeRenovation #HouzzTrends #TilePatterns #WetRooms #AccessibilityDesign #TransitionalStyle #WellnessFeatures #NeutralColors #HomeDecoration
