Emily Henderson just shared how she chooses lights for tall ceilings – these are her 3 styling secrets

High ceilings, while creating an expansive feel in a home, often present a significant challenge when it comes to effective lighting. Standard overhead lights are typically insufficient, and the installation of appropriate fixtures or chandeliers can be complex. Regardless of the room's purpose or the desired design aesthetic, illuminating spaces with high ceilings demands careful consideration. Interior designer Emily Henderson recently addressed this challenge during a lighting installation project for her brother's new build, a home characterized by exceptionally tall ceilings. Following her successful experience, Henderson shared her top three pieces of advice for selecting and styling lighting in rooms with high ceilings on Instagram. Her first key tip emphasizes the importance of choosing light fixtures that incorporate a diffused bottom. This design prevents direct glare from exposed bulbs, ensuring a comfortable and aesthetically pleasing light source, especially when occupants are reclining or looking upward. Instead of harsh, bare bulbs, fixtures with integrated diffusers provide ample illumination while shielding the eyes from intense brightness, contributing to a cozy and relaxing atmosphere within the living space. The second crucial piece of advice pertains to maintaining appropriate scale. As with all aspects of interior design, understanding and applying correct scale is vital when selecting lighting for tall spaces. For rooms with high ceilings but limited square footage, a more modestly sized fixture might be suitable. Conversely, expansive areas, such as the 'Riverhouse' project Henderson worked on, necessitate larger fixtures, and potentially multiple units, to adequately fill the vertical space and provide sufficient light. It is essential to compare the proposed light fixture's size against the room's overall dimensions to avoid selecting a piece that either disappears visually or overwhelms the space. Henderson's third styling secret involves adjusting the height of the light fixtures to ensure intentional placement without obstructing other design elements. Even with very high ceilings, light fixtures should not be positioned so high that they become visually lost or ineffective as light sources. The goal is to bring the lights down to an aesthetically pleasing level that provides functional illumination. This careful positioning also requires ensuring that the fixtures do not interfere with windows, artwork, or tall furniture and accessories. Henderson encourages experimentation with various configurations before finalizing the placement to achieve the optimal balance of aesthetics and functionality. By following these three straightforward yet often overlooked principles, homeowners can successfully light even the tallest spaces, resulting in a well-illuminated and inviting environment. #EmilyHenderson #HighCeilings #LightingDesign #InteriorDesignTips #HomeLighting #DesignTips #LightFixtures #EmilyHenderson #HighCeilings #LightingDesign #InteriorDesignTips #HomeLighting #DesignTips #LightFixtures
