August Smart Keypad Review
The August Smart Keypad is an accessory for the August Smart Lock, priced at $79, designed to simplify door access with a PIN code. This device offers a straightforward alternative to smartphone-based unlocking, catering to users who prefer a physical keypad or need to grant access to visitors without smartphones or the August app. Installation is quick and user-friendly, typically taking only a few minutes. Users can opt for a non-destructive installation method using an adhesive strip, or utilize the included screws and anchors for a more permanent fixture. The back plate adheres to the door frame, and the front panel then snaps into place.
Once installed, the Smart Keypad pairs with the August Smart Lock via the August app. Initial setup and code programming require the user to be within Bluetooth range of the keypad. However, August plans an update within 90 days to enable remote programming, provided an August Connect or August Doorbell Cam is set up as a bridge. The keypad can support up to 240 active PIN codes simultaneously. The app facilitates code generation, allowing users to either have a random code generated or create their own 4-6 digit PIN. For guests without smartphones or the August app, PINs can be conveniently sent via text message.
Operating the Smart Keypad is intuitive: users simply enter their PIN and press the unlock button. Security features include an automatic five-minute lockout after seven failed entry attempts. The keypad can also be fully disabled via the app, although this function currently requires Bluetooth proximity. A significant limitation is that detailed activity logs—showing when the keypad was used, which code was entered, and failed attempts—are only available with August’s second-generation Smart Lock, which supports HomeKit.
Future updates are anticipated within three months to address current limitations. These include push notifications for low battery alerts and a power-saving mode that deactivates the backlight until a button is pressed. The reviewer highlighted the practical utility of the Smart Keypad, citing instances where it proved invaluable, such as being locked out of the house or needing access while gardening without a phone or keys. While the current guest access functionality is basic—either granting full access or none—the reviewer expresses a desire for more granular control, such as scheduled access times and auto-expiring PINs for guests. These features, the reviewer notes, could be easily implemented through software updates.
Despite its cost, which requires an initial investment in the $199 Smart Lock, the reviewer posits that the Smart Keypad offers greater utility than a video doorbell. The hardware itself is described as simple and robust. The accessory's convenience and problem-solving capabilities, as demonstrated during the review period, underline its value as an addition to a smart home setup, particularly for those seeking reliable keyless entry beyond smartphone reliance.
