8 Ideas I Stole From British Designers to Help Me Map Out My Narrow Entryway

The author recently upgraded to a two-bedroom apartment, which, while not grand, offers a proper entryway. This narrow space, complicated by a laundry closet, necessitates clever furniture choices. The author turned to British interior designers for inspiration, noting their expertise in navigating tight quarters, particularly in Victorian townhouses. Laura Stephens, a U.K.-based designer, emphasizes that narrow hallways can still make a significant impact and serve as canvases for bold design decisions, such as statement wallpaper, striking tiled floors, or show-stopping runners. The article presents a collection of ideas inspired by these designers, adapted for the author's entryway, which does not include a staircase. One key idea is the use of patterned runners. Inspired by bold stair runners in British designs, the author plans to use a graphic floor runner to enhance existing floor tiles. Laura Stephens, for instance, combined a patterned runner with painted stairs in Farrow & Ball’s Pigeon and a bright console table from Rose & Grey, demonstrating how to layer patterns effectively while maintaining an earthy feel. Another suggestion is to create a gallery wall. Rebecca Hughes Interiors effectively used larger artworks in a hallway, complementing a traditional umbrella stand and rug with a playful Murano glass chandelier, transforming a potentially cavernous space into an engaging visual experience. For space-saving furniture, the article highlights two-legged console tables, which appear to float against the wall, as seen in a Kate Guinness-designed space. These tables, which give the illusion of having half their legs removed, can be found at retailers like The Expert and Etsy. A similar concept is combining a floating table with a mirror. Tiffany Duggan, an interior designer and owner of Trove, created a popular mirror-table with integrated drawers for small items like sunglasses and keys. For those unable to find a pre-made solution, the author suggests pairing readily available floating tables and shelves with a large mirror, as demonstrated by Lizzie Green in her tight corridors. Lighting solutions also focus on maximizing space. Instead of lamps that occupy surface area, the author plans to install cordless sconces on either side of her mirror. Anna Haines's project, featuring painterly shades, serves as inspiration for future hardwired fixtures, offering an elegant alternative to traditional lamps. The article also addresses shoe storage, traditionally a source of clutter. Kinder Design’s chic bench, with its tucked-away appearance, changed the author's perspective on shoe racks. A similar product, Article’s Kouva bench, offers a seat cushion and a comparable aesthetic. Finally, for a sophisticated entrance, Rachael Gowdridge's modern space features a wall-mounted cube topped with flowers, creating a museum-like display that serves as a stylish drop-spot for keys and other small items in a narrow entryway. #NarrowEntryway #BritishDesigners #SmallSpaces #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #SpaceSavingSolutions #EntrywayDesign #FurnitureSelection #DesignInspiration #NarrowEntryway #BritishDesigners #SmallSpaces #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #SpaceSavingSolutions #EntrywayDesign #FurnitureSelection #DesignInspiration
