6 Dated Bathroom Design Elements That are Making a Comeback in 2024

Interior design trends are cyclical, and elements once considered outdated in bathrooms are now experiencing a resurgence. This article highlights six such design details that are making a significant comeback in 2024, offering homeowners ways to refresh their spaces with a nostalgic yet modern twist. These returning trends move away from minimalist, clinical aesthetics towards more personalized and character-filled designs. One prominent comeback is bold wallpaper in bathrooms. Historically avoided due to practical concerns, advancements in materials and a desire for personality in smaller spaces have brought it back into vogue. Designers like Liz Goldberg note that wallpaper is excellent for powder rooms and guest bathrooms, providing a fun way to introduce patterns and colors. Retro-inspired patterns, particularly those with art deco and mid-century influences combined with vibrant hues, are especially popular for creating visual interest and reflecting individual style. Alcove bathtubs, along with built-in bathtubs, are also re-emerging as desirable features. After a period where freestanding tubs were favored, there's a renewed appreciation for the space-saving and seamless aesthetic that integrated tubs offer. Nina Lichtenstein, from Nina Lichtenstein’s Home Design, explains that modern interpretations of these tubs feature sleek lines and innovative materials, transforming them into elegant focal points that evoke a spa-like sanctuary. The comfort and cozy ambiance provided by these tucked-away bathing areas are highly sought after. Terrazzo tiles, a composite material featuring chips of marble, quartz, granite, or glass set in concrete, are experiencing a significant return to popularity. This versatile material adds unique texture and visual interest to bathroom floors and countertops. The playful flecks of color within terrazzo can create a statement look, and in contemporary designs, it is often utilized with subdued color palettes to achieve a sophisticated and timeless appearance. Brown bathrooms, a color scheme that was once considered dated, are being embraced again for their warmth and welcoming qualities. Moving away from stark white, earthy tones inspired by nature are gaining traction. Nina Lichtenstein points out that shades of brown such as taupe, chocolate, or terracotta, incorporated through tiles, paints, or accessories, evoke a sense of comfort and relaxation reminiscent of high-end spa retreats. Perry Walter of Walter Studio Interior Design suggests using a neutral brown palette as a backdrop for luxurious freestanding tubs to enhance this warm and inviting atmosphere. Retro tiles, characterized by bold colors and geometric patterns, are making a comeback, injecting personality and playfulness into modern bathrooms. These tiles can be used to create striking statement walls or flooring. Nina Lichtenstein recommends pairing them with minimalist fixtures and neutral tones to ensure a balanced and contemporary look. Liz Goldberg also highlights the appeal of matte and honed finished tiles in earthy colors, with creative installation patterns, to achieve custom and refined aesthetics. Finally, antique-style vanity units and mirrors are returning, adding charm and a sense of history to bathrooms. Details such as vintage-inspired sinks, vanity cabinets, and sink skirts, paired with ornate mirrors, provide a romantic touch. Perry Walter suggests combining antique vanity cabinets with framed gold leaf mirrors and modern tiles to create unique and personalized spaces that blend old and new. Interior Designer Kim Colwell emphasizes the trend of bespoke bathroom remodels that incorporate flea market-sourced vanities with natural finishes alongside glossy retro tiles, allowing for self-expression and individuality. The overarching theme is to create unique, soulful bathrooms that balance retro elements with modern finishes and minimalist accents for a harmonious and sophisticated result. #BathroomDesign #InteriorTrends #HomeDecor #RetroDesign #TileTrends #WallpaperTrends #VintageRevival #SpaBathroom #ModernBathroom
