Kids get in the spirit with these patriotic crafts

The Fourth of July marks the unofficial start of summer vacation for many children, making it an ideal time to engage them in holiday preparations through creative crafts. This article provides three simple, patriotic craft ideas that not only keep kids occupied but also result in festive decorations that can be reused annually. The crafts adhere to a strict red, white, and blue color palette, reinforcing the holiday theme. Amanda Kingloff, author of "Project Kid: 100 Ingenious Crafts for Family Fun," suggests two projects: firework flowers and stars and stripes bunting. The firework flowers are particularly easy to make, requiring only cupcake liners and drinking straws. Children who can use scissors can successfully complete this craft. The bunting project involves cutting triangles from paper or fabric, such as a canvas drop cloth, and then using freezer paper stencils to add stars and stripes with paint. Freezer paper is recommended for its ability to create crisp lines compared to store-bought stencils. After the paint dries, string or cord is glued to the back of each triangle for hanging. These projects offer varying levels of complexity, with the firework flowers being quick and the bunting providing a slightly more involved activity. Cristin Drewes of Provo, Utah, shares a third craft idea: a commemorative flag made using children's handprints and footprints. This craft uses acrylic paint on white craft paper or poster board, with blue handprints forming the "stars" and red footprints creating the "stripes." Drewes has made similar flags with her own six children, and one such framed piece remains a cherished gift in her parents' home. She also displays her own version over her fireplace for patriotic holidays like Memorial Day and Independence Day. This handprint/footprint flag craft is featured on popular platforms like Pinterest, ParentMap, and Drewes's personal blog, Serendipity, highlighting its widespread appeal and sentimental value. The article emphasizes that this craft is simple enough for even young children, primarily involving pressing their painted hands and feet onto the paper. The article also provides detailed, step-by-step instructions for creating the Firework Flowers, adapted from Kingloff's "Project Kid." The necessary supplies include two red, white, or blue cupcake liners, scissors, one drinking straw, and colored craft tape (such as washi tape), with optional glue. The assembly process involves flattening the cupcake liners and placing them face to face, then fringing the ruffled edges up to the flat center circle. The fringed liners are then folded twice to create a "quarter circle" shape, which is rolled from the bottom and inserted snugly into the straw. A small dab of glue can be used if the flower does not stay in place. A 2-inch piece of craft tape is then centered on the straw's shaft and folded back over itself to form a "leaf." Finally, the neck of the straw is bent to angle the flower slightly outward, completing the festive decoration. These crafts provide engaging activities for children and contribute to holiday decor, fostering a festive spirit. #PatrioticCrafts #KidsActivities #FourthOfJuly #HolidayDecorations #DIYCrafts #FamilyFun #SummerCrafts #HandprintArt #HomeDecor #PatrioticCrafts #KidsActivities #FourthOfJuly #HolidayDecorations #DIYCrafts #FamilyFun #SummerCrafts #HandprintArt #HomeDecor
