This Interior Designer’s Larchmont Home Embraces Color in Every Corner

The article chronicles the transformation of interior designer Laurie Scovotti’s Larchmont home, highlighting her philosophy of incorporating bold colors and patterns to create a vibrant and functional living space for her family. Scovotti, who established her design firm in 2017 after studying art and design and working with renowned designers, has always had a passion for interior design, which she traces back to her childhood. She recounts early experiments with room colors and decorations, acknowledging some youthful missteps but emphasizing a consistent drive for creative expression within living spaces. After moving from New York City to Larchmont in 2015 with her husband Matt and expecting their first child, they purchased a center hall colonial house. While the layout and functional space were appealing, the house required significant cosmetic updates. Initial renovations included gutting all bathrooms, replacing doors and lighting, updating some flooring, and painting throughout, serving as a preliminary step in personalizing the home. Scovotti’s design approach is characterized by a strong affinity for color and pattern, aiming to make her home feel "happy, fun, warm, and inviting." She challenges the common fear of using strong colors, asserting that bland choices are more likely to become tiresome. Wallpaper plays a crucial role in her designs, adding visual interest and energy to rooms. An example is the yellow Bob Collins & Sons bamboo wallpaper in the entryway, which immediately sets a dynamic tone for the house. In the kitchen, Scovotti opted for a bold porcelain hex tile for the floor, balancing it with classic cabinetry and finishes. The decision for a strong floor pattern was influenced by her husband and grounded by neutral tones in the cabinets, creating a harmonious yet striking combination. Tiling the walls up to the ceiling, including the range hood, further defines the kitchen space and distinguishes it from the adjacent dining room. The living room showcases Scovotti’s eclectic style, blending modern lines with traditional elements to create a family-friendly space that doesn't compromise on aesthetics. The full bathrooms were upgraded with marble tiles and custom vanities, adding elegance. For the serene primary bedroom, a touch of drama is introduced with an oversized, black mid-century light fixture and a black lamp shade. Scovotti views interior design as an art form that one lives within, emphasizing the balance between creativity and practicality and recognizing that a home is a continuously evolving project. The article also provides practical design tips for families, drawn from Scovotti's experience. These include choosing durable materials like cotton twill, denim, linen, and wool for upholstery and carpets to withstand wear and tear from children. She advocates for the strategic use of baskets for clutter management, preserving the illusion of organization. Long-range furniture choices are recommended, such as a daybed with a trundle, to adapt to growing children and their changing needs. Repurposing existing items, like using an antique wool carpet in a child's bedroom, is highlighted as a way to add character and longevity to decor. Additionally, Scovotti encourages thinking outside the box by avoiding overly childish themes in children's rooms, opting instead for sophisticated elements like bold green walls, burlwood dressers, and elegant Roman shades to create spaces that can grow with the child. Finally, she stresses the importance of regularly addressing clutter to prevent it from becoming overwhelming, maintaining that consistent vigilance is key. #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #LarchmontHome #ColorPalette #FamilyFriendlyDesign #DesignTips #LaurieScovotti #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #LarchmontHome #ColorPalette #FamilyFriendlyDesign #DesignTips #LaurieScovotti #HomeRenovation
