8 bathrooms that perfect the "quiet luxury" trend - it's the secret to spaces that look expensive, never garish
Bathroom design has significantly evolved, moving from purely functional spaces to areas promoting relaxation and unwinding, a shift epitomized by the "quiet luxury" trend. This trend transforms bathrooms into serene, spa-like sanctuaries by integrating specific design principles.
According to Artem Kropovinsky, founder of Arsight, a New York interior design studio, a quiet luxury bathroom should prioritize "serene spa vibes," incorporate greenery, and embrace minimalism. Key elements include simple, stylish designs with slender fittings and concealed storage, which contribute to a calm and tranquil atmosphere. High-quality bath fittings add a touch of prestige, and for enhanced indulgence, a freestanding bathtub or a spa-like walk-in shower with multiple showerheads are recommended. The color palette should be restrained and restorative, utilizing light, unobtrusive, or cool colors to amplify the sense of calm and spaciousness. The space can be further enriched with luxurious textiles such as plush towels, richly textured bath mats, or soft robes near the bath.
The article highlights eight examples of bathrooms that exemplify this quiet luxury trend. One example is a minimalist scheme featuring limewash walls, designed by Emily Lauren Interiors. This renovation involved a complete overhaul, incorporating custom-designed features like an integrated sink, stone bench, and walk-in three-piece shower. Natural and handmade materials were used throughout, alongside a mix of vintage and custom furnishings. Emily Brown emphasizes that fine details elevate the space, citing the seamlessly integrated basin with the marble countertop and the use of patina-rich raw metals for hardware. Limewash on walls and ceilings adds understated texture and a matte finish, while strategic lighting with dimmers creates a luxurious ambiance.
Another illustration is a pastel pink bathroom by Katie Harbison, which incorporates luxurious marble. Harbison notes that quiet luxury involves rich materials, making marble a central element in this design. A dramatic contrast is created by using a striking marble slab against muted micro cement walls, which provide subtle texture. The overall palette is calming, with the Breccia Viola marble adding an impactful and bold touch. A third example showcases a bathroom that integrates a home sauna, designed by Studio Zung. This reflects a growing interest in holistic design focused on health and wellbeing, with the space seamlessly blending Asian and Swedish influences to create a tranquil sanctuary.
Further examples include a tranquil room with a large round window offering mountain views, designed by Susannah Holmberg Studios, which aims for a hotel-like escape from daily life through monochromatic schemes, soft shapes, and varying textures. A bathroom by Lorla Studio features floor-to-ceiling zellige tiling, creating a mesmerizing, pearlescent effect and defining a cozy niche for a soaker tub. A dreamy wet room by Mehditash Design provides separation and a tranquil backdrop with natural materials and a tonal palette. A freestanding tub in the center of a room, designed by Luke Maloney Architecture, emphasizes relaxation as the main purpose of the space. Lastly, a bathroom in Austin, TX, by Emily Lauren Interiors, transformed into a quiet luxury retreat through material replacement, vanity redesign, and refinishing an original clawfoot tub, featuring Arabescato Corchia marble, Farrow and Ball paint, unlacquered brass taps, and terracotta tiles.
