8 luxe bathroom designs to inspire
This article showcases eight luxurious bathroom designs from various Australian interior designers, offering inspiration and expert advice on creating elegant and functional spaces. Each design highlights unique features, material choices, and design philosophies aimed at transforming bathrooms into sophisticated retreats.
Steve Cordony's master bathroom, for example, blends European detailing with contemporary elements like steel-frame shower and toilet dividers. The use of reconstituted marble for the bath and custom steel screens creates a strong graphic presence. Curtains, chosen by Morgan Ferry, add a soft, opulent touch, making the room feel like a suite in a historic hotel. This design emphasizes a striking dichotomy between old-world charm and modern functionality.
Alexandra Ponting's design focuses on artistic and unexpected details to achieve a luxurious space with European influences. A grand English bathtub serves as the focal point, complemented by tumbled marble chequerboard tiles. French pewter and oak tapware, a custom Italian linen shower curtain, sage-green Murano glass towel holders, and marble vanity with blue-vein trim tiles contribute to its unique charm and elegance.
Flack Studio, known for its material focus and unexpected designs, created a bathroom featuring custom toffee-coloured terrazzo tiles from floor to ceiling. This design incorporates a statement blue mirror and streamlined brass accents, delivering a sophisticated yet playful aesthetic. The client's desire for a design that is both timeless and unconventional, with a touch of humor, guided the holistic approach to this project.
Alexandra Donohoe Church of Decus Interiors designed a master ensuite where functional decor doubles as elegant furniture. Tall, arched silhouettes and a cloud-like color scheme define the space. The vanity and mirror are positioned as a standalone piece visible from the master bedroom, creating a beautiful focal point. Carrara marble was used consistently for floor tiles, wall tiles, and the vanity top, with the base color matching the paint on the joinery units and walls, ensuring a cohesive and tranquil ambiance.
Interior designer Megan Brown crafted a handsomely textural ensuite in a harbourside home, drawing inspiration from a walk-through wardrobe at its entrance. The design balances raw, organic simplicity with sensual refinement, featuring wall lights, honed marble, ribbed glass, and an oak door. Handmade Zellige Moroccan tiles add a glistening, glowing surface, contributing to the room's serene and luxurious feel.
Sally Rhys-Jones and Nadja Tate collaborated on a marble-clad bathroom where storm grey stone veining mirrors the surrounding bushland and waterfront views. The classic color palette and refined hardware allow the materials and views to be the focal point. The layout strategically places the shower and bath to take advantage of the views while maintaining privacy, creating a sanctuary-like experience.
Kate Walker of Kate Walker Designs addressed the challenge of limited space in a Melbourne bathroom by creating a wet room. This innovative solution allows for both a shower and a bath in a small area by positioning the shower in front of the bath. The use of ‘Warm Tundra’ limestone tiles, a ‘Haven’ bath in Nero, and Astra Walker fixtures in Brushed Platinum contribute to a functional and aesthetically pleasing family bathroom.
Lastly, Lynne Bradley tackled a tiny ensuite, replacing jarring right-angle geometries with curves to create a gentler flow and unify the space. Hexagonal marble-mosaic tiles introduce pattern, while an exacting radius formula was applied to the shower screen, shaving cabinet, vanity, and an integrated curved wall with a shower seat. The thoughtful use of color, including soft green grout mimicking the vanity, enhances the cohesive and sophisticated design.
